PPE for AirSpade/AirKnife work

been trying to talk my employer into purchasing an airspade. he has concerns of debris ricochet and causing damage. Anyone ever have this problem? ive never used an airspade / seen one used on the job but i imagine prepping a site to protect potential "targets" cant be too hard right?

Ok. Where does Cal-OSHA sit with it?

They don't say a damn thing about it- I think. I gotta look more closely At it.

My main concern is the best way to keep myself safe and minimize downtime and discomfort. OSHA can suck it.

Regarding debris ricochet: we throw up plywood over windows and in front of cars. Tarps help in certain areas, too.

In California, the state level of OSHA supersedes the federal level OSHA.

If you saw the regulations, it's scary. It says the boss determines at what height helmets are necessary. I can decide when to use a harness. No joke. The rules are total crap.

Because I have touchy sinuses, I wear a full face respirator when I air spade or knife. It looks like these:

It works great and you don't have to worry about soil and bits getting in your eyes either.

Although I won't work without the respirator, it does tend to get a little heavy after several hours. I've always been tempted to tie a rope from my belt to the back of the mask to hold my head up, because at the end of the day my neck is exhausted.

I don't think a hard hat is really necessary, but wearing a bandanna to prevent soil clods is helpful (of course, I have long hair, which makes a difference).

With the air knife I wear thick leather gloves, because the aluminum barrel gets hotter than blue blazes. But even the couplings on the air knife get incredibly hot.

I've used both tools in shorts and a tshirt, it's not the worst experience ever, just some stinging. I prefer long pants, long sleeve short with a button-able collar.

For people who get ear infections, I recommend using muff style hearing protection.

And everyone should use a Neti pot to rinse out your sinuses when you're done. Even if you wear a respirator.

If you have to work near windows or other damageable things, bring a lot of tarps and do a good job covering.

Never would have thought of it as PPE for this work, but now that you mention it, the Neti pot is a standard part of my AirSpade routine!

Yes! The Neti pot is essential! Great post readbothsides. [/quote

Of course, there's probably some gross fascination of what comes out after air spading that goes along with this too.
