Portland Climber seriously injured

These are the types of accidents that are difficult to get all the info. It will depend on whether or not the victim is forthcoming about what really happened. Otherwise, we speculate, did he cut the rope inadvertently? Was the rope old and damaged, breaking when he fell?

looked like the rope he was climbing on should have been retired a couple years ago. The rope also looked like it was the true blue made by samson, i heard this rope is supposed to climbed on and used for light rigging operations? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Samson sells it as climbing line, see image:

I haven't heard of anyone using it for that application in years, though, as climbing line construction and selections have come a long way since True Blue's heyday. It makes a great rigging line, though. Durable and pliable with just enough stretch.

I'd be interested to know how long it took from the time of the call to the time when the FD reached him with the work platform. In a city like Portland, it should be on the shorter end of the spectrum but it still might have been quite a while. Glad he's alive.

This is a perfect example of what happens if you climb on a line you have used as a rigging line.

Every saw shop and hardware store around here sells that stuff. That's the reason we have so many jack leg outfits around here. Training??? who needs training!

OUCH. Good thing those lower limbs were retained!

Not a time for speculation is it.

What is wrong with speculation here? I would say think of every possible scenario and how he could of done it so you won't.

In the news report, they show the rope where it "broke". In the news video, the rope appears to be cut. When a rope breaks, there is NOT a clean cut. When it is cut, it looks different.

yoyo, i can understand the usefulness of speculation; just wish it could be anonymous. I gotta feel bad for the guy, having done many major screwups in my time. Maybe that's why I got out of the removal biz long ago; pruning is dangerous enough...

Thanks Tom, wasn't sure because of the construction of the rope being without a core.

Until someone with expertise examines the rope or the climber tells what happened all we can do is speculate.

It could be that it has been used for rigging as well as climbing. Let's hope we can get TCIA to actually investigate this further.

At the recent GSTC I posed the question about sharing more information about accidents and the analyses akin to what Worksafe BC does. In short, the response was that there is concern about litigation. For the sake of the industry I hope we can find a way to get more detail and real insight into these accidents so we can learn from them. When we consistently have the same number of fatalities year over year then we are not learning.

Time to change the culture.
