I plug my tires all the time. I use the Safety Seal brand the tools are metal and made for the job not some skinny plastic handle that feels like its going to break and send a metal spike thru your hand. Ive used it to plug some fairly large holes made by a stick, four plug strips. The tire held air until they wore out a year later. I've never been concerned about throwing the tire off of balance.
