Pics from the PNW

thought I'd put up a couple pics from our neck of the woods. Many of these pics are from young guys/gals who have only learned their first knot in the last six months, some have almost a year and a half experience.

a couple more:

this was our morning commute for a couple days, rehabbing campsites and some canopy raising on an island.

P3220145.jpg

this was a 150' spruce tree, you can see I am tied in while making the face cut.

P3220147.jpg

When the breeze blew, the ground under my feet raised and lowered gently; the bank was undercut under the tree.

That's me, getting out of Dodge.

P3220149.jpg

150' of tree looks a lot smaller a hundred feet down in a churn. We cut off all the branches and some of the trunk, Poseidon took the rest.

here's a couple more

a couple guys tag-teamed the deadwood on this Doug fir.

the guys did a demonstration with their Alaskan mill. It was raining, so they decided to do the demo in the truck. Plus, they didnt have to lift that huge slab.

stifstump.jpg

We lost a couple good sized Picea sitchensis in last winters storms. This is the stump after the tree blew off.

ok, this is the end of 'em.

P9050003.jpg

This is a "hazard tree" we got asked to take down. A Thuja plicata, about 120', dead from about 35' up, heavy lean.

P9050006.jpg

I recognized some decay and cracks in the base of the trunk.

P9050014.jpg

Plenty of sound wood for the face, used a bore cut on the back-cut.

Talkin' about the cut and the stump with the dudes.

everybody I've met that works with and for the kids in the job corps has been, without a doubt, Good People. keep up the work sir, it has to be rewarding!

Thanks, it can be pretty fun work, especially when you're out in the field.
TreeBarber, these were all taken on the Oregon coast, just south of Newport.
Kevin, the tree went just like it was supposed to, I'll attach another shot of the stump so you can see it better.

Working with these guys has been real interesting and it can be really rewarding. Definitely the best job I have ever had.

What you used to make the plank directly on the yard?

bel lavoro ,ciao Matteo

"Cool Pics .. what did you do w/all the wood?"

All of the wood that we "produce" is either
a. split up into 16" pieces and disbursed to needy families through an energy assistance program
b. slabbed up and used in a variety of projects around center
c. left on site.

AJC,

Were Preston and Danny in any of those pics? I just finished working with those two on the project in New Orleans. Good guys, good climbers, hard workers.

After meeting them it makes me want to get involved with Job Corps.

Yes, that's Danny in the first pic, and in the pictures with the big Doug fir, thats Preston on the left. Glad to hear those guys represented themselves well; that was a great opportunity and I appreciate Mark giving them a chance.

I can't say enough good about them, we had a great crew, not a prima donna in the bunch and everybody pitched in when it came time to load big wood. That's the first thing I noticed about Preston, I was going to have him climb and then the plan changed to walking a bunch of wood out of a back yard... he was first in line grabbing the biggest rounds. He pulled big hangers out over a house and shed and hardly touched them.

I only got to climb with Danny once and he was strong and fast... quiet guy that one. I liked him, if I had the work to support a full time climber I would have hired either of them.

You guys do great work.
