Petzl vector for DRT?

Location
NE Ohio
I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on using 1/2 petzl vector line for DRT (Valdotain Tresse hitch). I usually climb DRT on Posion Ivy but the PI is too short for the next tree. My worry is that the Vector is too stiff for a good grip from the friction hitch. Any input or personal experience would be heplful.

Petzl doesn't want us using Vector for climbing line. They don't even market it to us, you almost gotta go to a caving supply.

They want it used as access line, not lifeline.

Too bad. Vector is a really sweet rope, 11 mm is all I know, though.

Vector is the red one.

Petzl... oy!

It appears to be a kernmantle rather than double braid but I can't tell for certain, that would make it difficult to splice.
Petzl gives no specs other than the jacket is 32 carrier, but it's listed as a lifeline for difficult access environments (which, by all accounts includes trees). They even say it's for fall protection. Might be nice but I'm pretty sure they didn't have tree climbers in mind when they designed it.

A rock climbing friend was talking with a Petzl thinks we (tree guys) live in the dark ages because we don't do SRT all the time. They don't get that trees are pretty unique in terms of roped access in that there is lots of up and down and over and around with TIP changes and almost no static sitting in a harness and working. They also have a major interest in seeing that things like friction hitches get replaced with mechs.
Screw'em, mechs are heavy and droopy, they get in the way and they don't work as well as a simple, elegant, well dressed knot.

I really want to like SRT for trees... really! There are lots of benefits, but I've yet to see an SRT system as versatile and useful as basic DdRT when it comes to moving around a big canopy. I've seen some that are close like the F8 revolver (haven't tried a unicender yet, seems promising) but sometimes simple, tried and true technology is better.

Besides, Velocity is STILL the best tree rope on the planet.

So you like Velocity do you? And you claim to use Velocity in a DdRT setting? And you call yourself a treeclimber - tsk, tsk, tsk.

You know I'm just kidding with you, right?

See, all this time I thought I was the only one that liked Velocity rope!

BTW, Blinky what do you do about the wax on Velocity? Haven't you noticed a stickiness with Velocity on DdRT, esp. a trad set up?

Edit:
Forgot to add, sorry for the derailment, now back to our regularly scheduled Vector program - well right after Blinky replies.

Petzl Vector for DRT?

I'll jump in. In the picture of the three ropes, red is Petzl's Vector, an 11 mm 24-strand kernmantle rope. One of my favorites of all time.

Green is 11 mm Velocity, well worn, climbed through rain days, the 'waxy coating', sticky coating, whatever, has long worn off. Amazing rope.

Orange is custom-ordered, 7/16" (11 mm) Stable Braid, that's right, the Sampson product we use as bull rope. The 11 mm is not carried anywhere, so ya gotta call over to Sampson and ask the right person (Stacy) and they'll oblige you, but only because none of the Arborist supplies carries less than half inch Stable Braid.

These are honestly the top three of my personal (11 mm) favorites, the Stable Braid being numero uno, then Vector, then Velocity. #4 would be 11 mm KMIII. 5 would be what I'm climbing on now, Tachyon. Poison Ivy is about eleventh, after Fly, but before anything 13 mm.

Vector, #2 on the all-time list. Not too shabby. No one in tree climbing has even heard about this rope.

And Tachyon at #5, what a surprise? This is one of the most awesome ropes the world of tree climbing has ever seen! It's probably #1 on a lot of peoples' list.

You have to know, though, this image was taken right at that beautiful point in history where the manufacturers began producing us (tree climbers) some fabulous 11 mm ropes. I was all about it, with real enthusiasm. I became a better climber with lighter, less bulk. This picture was my first Vector, and my first Velocity AND my first 11 mm Stable Braid. There had only been KMIII in 11 mm before that, and then real stiff caving ropes, or real mushy, dynamic rock climbing ropes..

This picture was taken after the Detroit TCIA Expo, like 5 or 6 years ago. Maybe 7, I lose count. This pic really does go back to the beginning of time.

Vector and Velocity both came out around the same time, Velocity a little earlier. Petzl commissioned Sampson Ropeworks to build them this 24-strand piece of artistry, Mmmmmm. Velocity is by Sampson. Vector and Velocity are both by Sampson.

So I take it that the vector just needs to be broken in? My worry was that, unlike my DRT ropes... my SRT ropes are significantly stiffer. The vector is brand new and wont hold a knot for anything. My other SRT ropes ( sterling brand) are still stiff after 100 climbs, so after reading the posts you guys are saying that the vector rope will soften up?

Also, I could be wrong but the vector in the above pic still looks stiff to me.

I don't like the vector. I bought a length for an access line and it is stretchier than my KM III. It just doesn't have a great feel to it.
