The 'Sequoia' name = cynical attempt by French company to exploit
[/ QUOTE ]
There's another French company called MAVIC - they make bike racing components. French bike components have a notorious reputation for being finicky and sometimes having their own standards, incompatible with the rest of the market. We interpreted this to be just the stereotypical snooty French attitude and combined these concepts to yield this saying: "MAVIC - Made by People Who Don't Like You."
Sorry for the tangent. I don't think Petzl's being cynical at all. It's an interesting marketing scheme though. Take a name familiar to Americans and apply it to a new product being marketed toward a specific market segment, much of which is American. Additionally, I think the name Sequoia is not intended to reference the park, but rather the namesake tree, which is symbolic of strength and stability.
Plus, it's better that some of their names: TREESBEE, GRILLON, STRING, OSCILLANTE - give me SEQUOIA please.
