Petzl ASCENTREE

im almost 200. im 6'0 and 175 and foot lock just fine. i found out that if you dont have the right length of cord for you, you will more then likely be using you arms to climb. you lock then stand up and as you stand you advance your hitch. i used to grip the rope, then pull myself up while i locked my feet and then slide the hitch which is WRONG and will hurt your elbows badly.

I just use two handled ascenders on two seperate cords. Keeping them seperate gives me a more natural and ergonmic grip, it also allows the ascenders to spread with the rope as I reach the tie in point, that way I can get closer in stead of having to stop 3 feet under. Paired with the foot ascenders I can climb very quickly and effciently. With the same system I can also climb SRT by adding a foot loop to one ascender. Check out my system on www.treeclimbersguide.com (gear guide, mechanical ascenders)and also on you-tube.

I always wondered if that would work. So you use two separate lines? I wanted to try sending the ascentree up to keep the legs of one rope from shifting, but never tried it.

I use two ascenders attached to one carabiner at arms length by two 8mm samson ice cords. It works very well for me, and I can use it on double ropes side by side, or SRT with one above the other. Check out the gear guide section on my website for pics, they are two big to attach on here.

I did check it out, I was just wondering if you are actually using two separate climbing lines or if you have one (doubled) line secured somehow up at the top. An Ascentree can be used in this fashion by 'walking' it up the legs of the rope, specifically, pulling one leg of the rope, then the other repetetively.

I usually have one rope running over the TIP. When I teach students this technique (I am a tree climbing instuctor) I will secure it to a false crotch line with a figure eight knot so the ends cannot run. But personally I don't feel the need for a backed up system, as long as I climb carefully and keep the ascenders clear of brush they will not fail. I tried walking one leg at a time with two static lines but didn't care for it, obviously I do that SRT but the balance is is more over the center of your body on one line.
