Pantin

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
Is anybody having problems with the straps on their pantin? I can wrench that thing down and after about 30' it is already loose on my ankle. I've tried an overhand after the buckle and it still pulls through. It is 10 years old so maybe its just worn out. I havven't used it much until recently trying out SRT. It's sat in my garage for a few years so its not like i've been gringing it every day. What do you all think? I'm also so tired of my velocity kicking out. I've added a biner to keep it closed but it still comes out. I thought small lines were better. Steve

Mine's about 5 years old and it doesnt loosen up.
It used to kick out easily until I adjusted it to fit directly under the ball of my ankle.
Maybe the nylon straps need replacing.

Yeah Petzl. I think i've seen guys complain about the CMI one. You guys like it I assume? Maybe i'll change things up. I haven't been pleased with it since I bought it.

The CMI ascender is pretty clunky but the rope stays put and you can hook the little nub on it with your foot to kick it off the rope if need be.

I like the petzl and it's easy kick out but do find the strap to be a Pain in the . I personally dont like the idea of locking my foot in. The new ISC (stein) pantin looks good although it, like the CMI doesn't have easy kick out. Maybe right for you I sewed my petzl directly to my boot because I got so annoyed with the straps.

yuck....I like my pantin, but I too find it pops off when I don't want it to, unless I lock it off with a biner.

maybe it is the way I slide my leg up? I dunno, but it sucks when you don't want it to.

Kevin, let's see a pic of the pantin sewed to your boot, that's a riot! Talk about customization!

I don't mind the pop off, Ican fix that with a biner. What I can't deal with is the straps coming loose. I have even tied them off after tightening them and they still work loose. Mostly the top strap. I can tie a few overhands under the sole of my foot for that strap.

good luck bro', it is the nature of the beast, I'm wondering if some Velcro sewed on the straps to keep it from
moving?

Velcro is an awesome idea! My cmi just took a dump on me so now I'm getting a petzl. I might have to try it out. I will post pics if I do

I have both devices. I wore out a pantin, then bought the CMI because of drawbacks with the pantin. The pantin was much easier to use and was quicker to install and remove. It was also smaller and lighter and required less rope below to start self tailing. I did, however, have to sew the straps to keep them from coming unadjusted by themselves. The rope also had a bad habit of kicking out at the worst times, and mine is worn out after 2 years.

The cmi is a well built unit that I expect will last as long as I care to use it. It is bigger and bulkier and the strap system is such that there are two adjustment buckles which also add to the weight and bulkiness. The straps are kevlar or some other kind of material that does not melt. Mine has frayed at the end and is becoming close to impossible to thread into the buckle to install it. The spring and the self locking style cam require quite a bit more rope in order for it to self tail and if you bring your foot up quickly, sometimes the rope comes up with it instead of passing through it and you have to wait a moment for it to pass before you can resume ascending.

My ultimate solution would be a pantin with a croll style locking cam with the strap system designed so I don't have to sew it to keep it from slipping. For now, I am going to retrofit the strap system from my pantin onto my cmi.

take some super-glue, put it on the ends of the CMI straps, then quickly shape it to a nice tapered end, it is tricky and you gotta move fast, but it works well and makes a neat-end on the straps.

Interesting, I was just pantin-ing all over a huge elm yesterday and was having problems and was thinking about starting a similar thread.

I use two different Pantins, both Petzels. One is sewn on the bottom, one is not. The sewn one causes a LOT less headaches, but I didn't get it QUITE right when I sewed it.

About to sew the second one, and make sure to get it so it lines up perfectly straight with the rope. That is what causes the rope to escape, more than anything, if the rope is entering and exiting at an angle anything other than 90°.

I think Bing's idea is great, though I think the Pantin will outlast the boots, which may be a moot point anyway, since the way you sew the Pantin itself will be very boot-dependent, and may need to be adjusted with each boot you use it with.
