OP i2i prusiks

I recently started playing around with OP 10mm. I've only had limited success with double braid eye splices before, so I was thrilled to find how easily the class 1 DB eye splice goes with OP. I'm making a U-saver (AFS) out of OP (main body of U-saver) and had a little left over that I was going to make into an i2i prusik, but then I started taking a closer look at the splices I made and the splices on OP prusiks I've bought. They are very different.

There is no way there is a 5.25" cover bury in the store bought ocean i2i's I've got on hand. This is the amount I buried because 14x the rope diameter is the measurement given to me on the Toss vids. Did I use the wrong splice? I had read on this board at one point that OP was a class 1, but the discovery of the radically different splices has me second guessing myself. I've included some pics for anyone who is interested in oogeling my handywork. Sorry the pics looks like refried crap.

I've been contacted by rich regarding the i2i I got from tree stuff and he assures me that there is far more than 3" buried, they are just tapered in such a way as to keep the rope diameter tight and knotable. I wasn't trying to sound like I distrusted the splices he made, I was just concerned about the integrity of my own. *sigh* I guess high performance homemade OP i2i's are probably out of my reach for the time being....at least until someone sheds some light on the subject for me or I can make it out to a workshop where folks can teach me techniques that I just don't have as of yet.

But the question remains, class 1 DB eye splice on 10mm OP.....is this an acceptable splice?

I follow the class one double braid directions and on a 30" eye and eye I get a pretty good product. I'm not at the point of messing with directions. Thats something that needs to be done and then broken. Follow the directions and you should be good.

Btw the pro's taper are generally very sexy. I have a hard time telling the actual length of them.

jman: Yeah, I'm thinking about making a 32" or so i2i using the same splice I used on the U-saver and using it for a distel or something else other than a VT. With the long stiff throat that the mnft instructions yield, I just can't see it performing like the pro i2i's I've bought. Give me enough time to wear out this pro spliced prusik I'll dissect it to see what kind of mysteries I can learn.

But yeah, I've slightly modified manufactor's instuctions for stuff like ice tail with no worries (the instructions samson gives for eye 2 eyes aren't really suited to producing an even knotting prusik with ice tail....I assume they were really meant for tenex), but double braid is a different animal. I barely trust the splices I've made on double braid already. I always feel like I could have done better on one stage or another. If I get to playing around with modified methods, I'll for sure send in a couple or three to be broken before I hang my life on it.

You can make your own wire fid and it works just fine. 3/8" OP is the easiest splice I have done. There is a thread on wire fids that has some good tips on the type of wire to use but any stiff wire should do. OP splice

Does anyone have a video of a splice done with a wire fid? I'm surprized there aren't any videos on youtube. This sounds like an efficient and super cheap way to do it.

Sorry I don't have a video camera but, I learned from these videos. Class 1 Double Braid Wesspur and New England

Just taper the cover before you insert it in the core; slide the wire fid from the opposite direction as the tubular fid would go. Place the tapered cover through the wire about 2" to 3" or so and pull it through. When I bury the core inside the cover I wait to taper it till I have pulled it through with the wire. Just pinch the tip of the core with the wire and cut at an angle then tape with masking tape to form a cone.

I will try to remember to take more pictures next time.

One more tip I learned was instead of ting a slip knot to keep the tapered cover from sucking back in while you perform the core/cover bury (like they show in the New England video) use a heavy duty clip instead.

Just wondering if 10mm OP is any easier to splice than 8mm. Everyone says OP is easy to splice but the 8mm looks like it would be a pain in the arse.

You are working with small stuff, but it goes together easier than any other double braid I've ever played with (wich TBH is limited experience to draw from). Toughest part for me is the pure core tuck portion of the splice. The cover is very malleable, but with a little pushing and pulling, it goes where you want it to. After you've made your tucks, forget about it.....the splice practically buries itself.
