One of my favorite trees in the neighborhood...

Closeups show lots of wound wood that appears to be holding the adjacent bark firmly in place.

It's probably a race between the exposed wood rotting and/or getting attacked by insects and the wound wood closing over the damaged area.
That’s about as best as you can expect. All things considered, I think it looks really good. I’ve not known Oak heartwood to rot very easily.
