Ohio Chapter TCC 2007

In the 13 years that I competed I never dreamed how much work it would take to pull together a TCC, now that I am on the other side I have a much fuller appreciation for the tremendous amount of coordination and teamwork required. I must say that working the event is equally as much fun as competing and I strongly encourage everyone to get involved with it. You will learn a ton and have a great time working with excellent people. The more people involved the better the events will go. I can tell you firsthand that working with guys like Norm, Kristian, Roger, everyone else has been some of the most fun I have ever had.

Hey Norm, what is the Illinois policy for signing up ? Do you have problems with companies wanting to send more climbers?

It's stated in the flyer we send out to every IAA member "first come, first serve". Guys like TK, Cameron, Mike Dirksen, John Meiszner are the 1st to sign up every year. If more than 5 from 1 Co. want to compete, we have them show up at the comp and take the place of 'no shows'. We stop at 30 and historically have 28 or 29 show up.

Takes alot of time , but I don't mind . I've never seen more than five from one company , so that would be a fair number . I've seen alot of three climbers from one company. We also have an apprentice division , where all first time competitors with 1- 2 years climbing experience compete . We usually get about ten of them and mix them with the group of Journeymen.
Long day , a few happy climbers and the would of's , should of's , could of's , won'ts and never wills .

I've just taken on the position of the KY TCC chair and what an "eye opener" The coordination process is quite the task. I would venture a guess that its quite possibly one of
the hardest events to pull off for any Chapter. On the other hand, its probably the most rewarding too. I'm sure that I'll be racking the brains of the TCC veterans in the very near future. Its interesting to observe the huge differences from chapter to chapter. One of our challenges
is to field enough climbers to make the event worth all the effort. Its never been cancelled (due to lack of participants) but it would be great to have more climbers and a much smoother event. I don't think that's possible without a huge amount of volunteers and ENTHUSIASM from the event sponsors and coordinators! Post those event dates.

Great idea Glenn. Do you have separate prizes for this group?

I saw this in action at the last PennDel Western comp and I was floored at how well it worked out. They had two seperate work climb trees and they were able to run the climbers through the whole comp extremely efficiently. Scott Sjolander (sp?)and crew did a terrific job despite the uncooperative weather. (set up rained all day and comp day was threatening to and finally did after the last climber exited the work climb)

Crazy Jimmy was telling me about the Texas TCC system where they hold their climbers meeting on Friday and then run the Throw Line, Footlock, and Belayed Speed events, saving the Work Climb, Aerial Rescue, and Master Climb for Saturday. This enabled them to avoid a long day under a hot sun on Saturday and also allows them to run a whole bunch more competitors through. Plus you could do all of this without doubling the amount of techs, judges, and volunteers. Seems like a great system that has a lot of possibilities.

Hey,

Cleveland is where my mom works part of the week. I would love to come up and help out in any way that you might need. I could also bring my girlfriend, who just adores roadies. I mean Rhodies. Her nickname is rock n roll girl.

But seriously, Keep me in mind for a judging spot or a tech.

Hey Stephen,

We would be honored to have you involved. I will keep you informed about any changes that come up, but for now we will have set up on June 1st and the comp on June 2nd. As we get closer to the date we will start getting accommodations for everyone.

PS let your girl know that Cleveland is famous for many things other than being the poorest "big" city and our flammable rivers, namely that we are "the "rock n roll city" Why this is I have no idea.

This has been going on at the Penn-Del for as long as the TCC has been around. We announce the winners in the apprentice for all the events and give a Plaque to the overall winner . This Apprentice division can only be entered one year. We send the Apprentice climbers in the same work climb tree , but give them two extra minutes. The footlock is 40 ft. and the rest is all the same. Mixing them in with the older more experienced climbers is a good learning experience for them. A couple of these climbers I've seen over the years have become regular prize winners in the Journeymens Division.

Rich,

It was great to meet you at the CAA-TCC. If you need help with the scoring or a tech -- Maybe I can get up there. (might have to car pool) Keep me in mind, and send me some info on the TCC.

What was your favorite color??? Florida Blue

Hey Rich,

Count me in. I've got the bug now!

I'd love to compete if possible, but if the Ohio guys fill up the available spots I'll be there to judge/tech.

Keep me posted.

Considering the snow I returned to after the CAA TCC and the salted color of my car while in NC you would think that white is my favorite. Rest assured it IS NOT FLORIDA BLUE!!!!!

Vince, we would be absolutely thrilled if you would come up to fix the myriad of problems we have always had with the scoring programs. The fact that CAA ran 25 guys through the preliminary events.... BEFORE NOON... is nothing short of miraculous. One of our biggest hang ups has always been the scoring. It would help us immensly to have you there to help us work things out. The only problem is that once here you more than likely will give up your taste for sun, warm weather, non flammable rivers, and all the other things that you southeners seem to enjoy and trade it all in for the wonderful world of: FEET not inches of snow, sports teams that under achieve regularly, and the stigma of knowing you live in the one spot that has a worse reputation than Hoboken NJ. Did I mention we are the poorest big? (its a relative term) city in the nation?
All kidding aside Cleveland has a ton to offer. You will really enjoy the Holden Arboretum and they are going all out to make this event one to remember.

Cory, I have to say that I think our plans of running 35 competitors is going to have to be scaled back after seeing what we saw this weekend. My guess is that we will have the field full from Ohio climbers, but in one way, shape, or form we MUST have you up here to be part of it. We could really use your skills, knowledge, and attitude to help us strive to raise the level of our competitions. I really look forward to seeing you and the rest of your fellow Kentuckyites up north.

****TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN JUDGING OR TECHING********

Please let me know if you are interested in helping out. The dates are June 1st for set up (and seminar) and June 2nd for competition day. We have a rain date (similar to the CAA rain date) scheduled for June 3rd.

We would be thrilled to have anyone and everyone who would like to help out, and or, has an interest in maybe shadowing some of the judges to learn what it is all about. Please send me an email if interested: richardahattier@sbcglobal.net

Well I see that Easy is heading up that way so I might be able to catch a ride with him.

Easy, are we doing a "road trip"?

As for the scoring, should not be a problem. Just need to know which score sheets you will be using, which rules, and the number of judges for each event. Oh ya, and how many competitors. In June, that far north, you should have long summer days. Which means we could run a little bit longer then what we had down in the deep south during Winter. If I can not make it -- I will make sure you have a scoring program that is simple to run. But I would enjoy giving back the assistance that which I have recieved.

peace in every cut,

Thanks to everyone committing to helping out. You CAA guys set the bar pretty dang high and we will need tons of help to even come close to what you guys pulled off.

Once I have firm information on everything I will be sure to send it out to everyone. Take note that there will be a semi mandatory sushi dinner probably after the event.

Come on Paul, Rich knows good sushi. We had some excellent stuff there in Minnesota and I'm looking forward to helping out since my climbing will probably still be limited by then. More than happy to help as a tree tech or whatever you need rich. Right now I have to take it easy for 2 months and can't really climb hard and don't feel like I'll be ready to compete so I figured i'd venture over to give you a hand plus learn some stuff at the seminar. I told the boss I would need that June 1st off already that was part of the stipulations for coming back this summer. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

I ate sushi
