North Twin Isl

I've always wanted to climb one of the big white pines on North Twin Island in the Apostles of Lake Superior. Of the 21 islands, it's the only one that was never logged. I got my chance in August. It was a little tough getting ashore and hiking through the tangles with gear was challenging. This island isn't visited. There's no holding ground for anchoring and there are no trails. As usual, I didn't take enough pictures and my cell battery was dying. Here are a few shots though. Wish I had got a photo of where we hauled the dinghy ashore. It was a neat little break in the rocks with an inner "harbor". Here's a view to the north looking over the canopy. I happened to get a large dragonfly in this pic.

This is looking east towards Outer Island. My friend's boat is not just drifting around. Our wives were happy to have it to themselves for awhile.

The Apostles are a national treasure. This is Julian Bay on Stockton Island. Rippled sand bottom, 3-side protection. (Last pic for now.)

Nice, the darners (dragonfly) are migrating south now, amazing how high they fly. Awesome view in the first pic, all the old white pine scattered across the island, emergent above the hardwood canopy. Damn glorious.

The crowns have that craggy look of old whites that have weathered many a storm. Those are the trees with the most character, every top unique.

Thanks chuck looks like something I'd like to be doing myself. Interesting the marks on the shore indicating the tide.

Thanks, Tom. Here I thought the moon was responsible. It looks like people on the beach there. Lake George in the Adirondacks is really cold too.
