Nifty

Touchy touchy and you guys are tree guys? No one said you are a hack for using a manlift, just so happens our local hacks do use lifts.

Also, Careful about relating years of experience with being qualified, if you've been hacking it up the whole time there in lies a tradgedy. Note I said if. Cause I do not know you or your work, but our local hacks like to brag how many years they've been hacking it up.

Not touchy...just trying to make a point. The nifty, if used properly, has much less of a negative impact on trees from ground compaction than a bucket truck. Makes me wonder why everyone isn't saying "if you feel you need one of these to do tree work, you should not be doing tree work", about all the bucket trucks.
Also, I was once a certified arborist, but chose to sever my ties with the ISA, Not my dedication to proper tree work or continuous learning. Even though I do not support the ISA certified arborist program, I have never felt the need to bash it, but feel I am qualified to do so.
Seems like you are implying no one should use a nifty for tree work because some local hacks do, and no one should mention how long they have been doing tree work, because your local hacks do. Note I said "seems like", not trying to put words in your mouth.
No offense meant to anyone, but if someone asked about a knuckleboom, and the same response was posted, I would bet the cat fight would be on. That's the only point we were trying to make, peace.

How would you do the job I mentioned without one? Ladders were not an option either, for the tops anyway. Nor any crane access.

Cory and Southsoundtree,

Both good responses.

I read them days ago, but haven't had time to respond.

I tend to be extreme sometimes, it stirs up conversation.

I haven't used a bucket truck since around 2003 I think. ( the last time i borrowed one; and i always hate it, generally get out of the bucket anyway)

But, I've used our k-boom with the "bucket" or tied into it for holly trims and like you said, Southern Magnolia.

For those trees, there is no faster, better way to do it. I did on ladders and scafolding years ago. unsafe maybe and not as fast.

Now, do I think a new manlift is worth the money? NO.

If it is, I guess the company must lack a skilled climber or two.

So be it. But if you NEED a man lift, then many trees are not likely getting trimmed properly or not trimmed at all.

I looked at the spider lifts years ago, the price was high. Only "needing" it several times a year did not make sense to purchase one.

I think it makes more sense for most of you guys to continue to rent one if only needed now and then.

Anyway, back to what i was saying, looking at the spider lift and the cost, steered me into another direction, the K-boom.

do we need a crane every now and then? Heck yeah! Do we need a manlift now and then? Well, only a few times a year. Do we need a log truck and a skid steer hauler? Many times. Do we need a huge 40 yd chip box? A few times a year.

Therefor, a k-boom with hooklift was the choice.

What I am really saying is, if you think $80,000 or so is worth it just to lift a person up on jobs, there must be skill lacking, why not get a skilled person instead?

There are VERY FEW jobs where a manlift is "needed".

I had a spiderlift.
Working in tandem (when pruning) with a climber worked really well. The climber worked the inside of the canopy, I worked the outside with the spiderlift. The climber also liked the free ride to his TIP.

and..... ?

I sent it down the road. I could'nt justify the time and work savings for the maintenance headaches ($) that came with the machine.

The cool thing about trailer lifts is that many rental yards rent them.

now... don't get me started on those friggen k-booms!

Oh, X, BTW, your (friggen) PM box is full. (!)
