New Urban Tree Care reality show on Nat Geo

Re:Urban Tr Care reality/myth show on Nat Geo

I like the show well enough to watch it. Outside of the staged material, I find it reflects a realistic view of the tree industry. Some companies follow the latest research and safety standards and some don't. I think the visionaries of the 70's would be proud to see the least respected company on this series at least showing people wearing some sort of safety equipment. Think about this.

It is quite amazing to see the "venom" over one tree guy's opinion about women in tree work. Sure, there are a few women here and there than can handle the day to day rigors of tree work, but as a whole they cannot! When did we start basing all of our "facts" on the exception and not the rule! If you have had a good experience with a women/female groundy or climber then good for you! It doesn't though, make us "all men" crews evil, backward, or bigoted. I too had a good experience with a women (albeit I use the term loosly as I don't think she even viewed herself as one) as a "groundperson", but as a whole I would much prefer working with other men and find them generally more capable in our field.

[/ QUOTE ]

What you write is venom. Others with open minds get it, but apparently there's a wall of bigotry that some cannot climb. Of course there are more capable and qualified males out there to fill the tree industry workforce, but only because we have made it that way. Don't you get it? Women can and will do this job, whether you like it or not. I prefer to be on the side that is helping create opportunities.

Me too! I have had enough "men" on my crew that were p~ssies or cry babies than I could shake a stick at. Tree work is not for "Men", it is for any able bodied individual that can use their head to see ahead and put basic skills to use. Women tend to use different muscle groups than men which leads to fewer injuries and less stress. Women will survive in this industry if we let them. I do.

Re:Urban Tr Care reality/myth show on Nat Geo

Is it really bigotry???.... I've never seen one woman on a full time tree crew in my market. That's not saying anything bad about women... There are women that can climb circles around most men...

A good friend's daughter was wounded in Iraq. I've known her since she was 6. She was the sweetest little girl you'd ever meet. Roadside IED.. the shock alone damaged her guts... many operations, PTSD, can never have babies.. addicted to painkiller and now drugs... heartbreaking..

Its not bigotry for me to say women shouldn't go to war.. I think men shouldn't go either..

tomthetreeman,
Based on your avatar, perhaps I should assume you don't like hiring white or black employees of either sex. It would appear that you are racist (at least in your hiring practices) against those that are not of Latino background. Do you possibly believe them (men of Latino descent) to be in some way superior to men of other race or nationality?

OK...time for everyone to push away from the keyboard and take a breath...now..three more.

I'm getting weary of being put in the position of firefighter when these flame wars get going. YOu guys toss the matches and I get burned.

And this is where a post count tells a story. 088, check your facts before you judge a book by its cover.

Re:Urban Tr Care reality/myth show on Nat Geo

Now I get PMs from Tom. This is precisely my point. You can throw around the terms bigot and woman hater all you want to and go completely unchecked and supported by your fellow liberal brethren. Yet when I (for sake of a point) presume and throw out equally disparaging terms, I get crucified. We are still a free nation for now! Where we can still function with freedom of speech and opinion (unless you have traditional or conservative beliefs!!!)! So thanks "guys" for constantly displaying your "open mindedness" unless someone of a different mind comes along an speaks his/her opinion and they're automatically labeled a "closed minded" bigot. It is you my friends who are the truly closed minded Bigots as continually evidenced by your more than lacking responses. With very little obvious fact, and heaping piles of emotion!

Re:Urban Tr Care reality/myth show on Nat Geo

Stihl,

Are you sure that you're being crucified? Are you sure that no one else didn't get asked to calm down?

It has nothing to do with lib/con etc. It's about being respectful to other people.

Of course, this is a great country. What a lot of people never learned in civics class is that freedom of speech and censorship are issues between a person and the government. Not what is said in private.

So often it seems like people think that just because they have a keyboard and access to the Internet that they can blather on with no repercussions for what they say. There's no responsibility or accountability like what they would expect to have if they said the same thing face to face in public.

What a train wreck this thread's become. Disappointing.

Thanks for the backup CreTree. That's the second time someone has made an assumption about my avatar. Yikes.

I have no problem with women working in our industry, run with it ladies!

Something has bothered me though, if equality is so important, why separate the men from the women for the tree climbing comps?

Throw everyone together and see what happens!

Re:Urban Tr Care reality/myth show on Nat Geo

Probably have better luck with HuluPlus than Netflix. Haven't tried yet, but they tend to have a more-current selection of TV shows.

What?!
No opinions on this?!

Go away for awhile and the thread takes a funny turn. I don't think the show will be around for a second season.

As for TreeVet, he is looking at a very specific thin slice of our industry. To a certain extent, he is correct. I worked with a woman in the mid atlantic region in the 90s and early 2000s. She was the production manager, ran a crew and performed all aspects of tree care on a daily basis. When it came to the very large removals and negative blocking, the STRONGEST person on the crew would perform the task.

She competed in 4 ITCCs and could out climb a fair amount of men I Know but she would also be the first person to admit she has her limitations. She was in production full time for 12 years before she retired and became a nurse.

Women aren't clamoring for anything. Women who like tree work just want to be treated fairly.
If women have not been front and centre on the bigass swaggering testosterone fueled removal only crews, it's probably because they have been made to feel unwelcome. Just guessing, based on comments from guys on this thread and others I've come across that fancy themselves these exact badasses of tree wrecking.

And comps are nothing like real tree work, especially removal work.
