New to spider legs

We too use spider legs on every job, which is not too many:), we attach one chain first to maintain the legality in the process and then balance with two eye slings. Works just as great now as it did when Mark taught us how to use them last year.

C&S technique, way to go!

We wanted to use spider legs to balance as we usually do, but the law said that we needed to use the chain or other rated eye/eye sling, So our only idea that seemed plausable was to use one "regulation" sling to satisfy the law and then balance with one or two spiders when needed. It works.

Its much the same law here in the UK.

Here's a 4 ton pick using the very technique:

endless old school/new school issues?

I think it more about the use of knots. Some companies allow ya to use them, other go by the rules and wont let them be used.

[ QUOTE ]

That being said all the crane work I have ever done has been with slings. I am basing my thoughts on what I have read and talked with others about. I sure would like to give working with a set of spiderlegs a try sometime soon.

I can fix that.

Want to schedule a few days in Louisville?

I started out on a Taughtline, moved on very quickly, I won't use spider legs, not because I'm setting my ways, not because I think they're a bad thing, not because I don't trust knots, I won't use them because they are enough amatures in our industry who drive by our jobs and think "I can go to the hardware store, get some rope and do that". Anybody can rent a crane(believe me a hack in my area does it all the time and thinks it makes him a pro) any body can go to any hardware store and buy a chainsaw and a big rope and go out there and increase our accident rates.

Thats the worst conceivable reason to not use a really great piece of equipment.

What if some bozo strolled by your jobsite and saw you climbing with a tautline? They figure, "I can tie that knot." And so they go to the hardware store and......

Try again. Why don't you use spider legs?

are you okay?

way to go looking out for the public....

We better not climb trees anymore, if someone sees an arborist climbing, they might decide they could do it too and we wouldn't want to be the cause of Mr. Joe Public getting hurt because of something he saw us do.

oh well, i've written before I've thought too.

I agree, this logic makes no sense.

Yeah sure, I agree but you can't go around hiding great work practices to keep others from trying to use them before they are properly trained. Besides, maybe the "hack" already knows about them because of another company or worse, he's here with us now?
