New Boots

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
I'm having trouble deciding on a new pair of boots that are good on spikes and without. There's a ton of information on here. Anybody wish to give an opinion on a pair they've worn for a while? I'm not overly worried about saw protection but it's a plus. I am leaning towards the Mendel or the Evo II

I am growing more and more disappointed with the lack of quality of the Evo 2's...
Salewa makes a much nicer boot.

I have the salewa mountain trainer mid Gtx. I love them. Only used them a time or two with spikes but they're not worse than anything else I've used. A great compromise.

No break in period.

The only thing that has surprised me is I cut the leather on one boot (clean cut), and punctured it on another. No idea how either happened, but it doesn't deter me, just tells me I need to be more vigilant.

By far the most comfortable footwear, other than flip flops, that I've ever owned.

I prefer one piece leather mountaineering style boots. Had a pair of la sportivas that lasted over two years, more of a backpacking style so not as good on spurs but maybe a little better without and on the ground. Now I have scarpa wrangells that are a bit taller and have a stiffer sole so are really nice on spurs and still work fine on trimming and pounding the ground. I live and work in the mountains so your needs may be different in the flatlands. Gotta have good ankle support and waterproof.
I have done the more traditional logger style and they don't seem to hold up as well as one piece leather, I always blew a seam somewhere.
I am considering buying some 5.10 ascent shoes for pruning and rec climbing. Their rubber is awesomely sticky on basically any surface.

If only those 5.10 soles were stitched on instead instead of just glued...

I'm on my second pair of salewa's and love them. Salewa has several new styles out now on amazon. I missed out on a pair of Crow's for $105. Regular price is $278. They also have an Alpine that looks like it has a more distinct heel that looks good. All in the $200-300 range. I check amazon daily go see if I can score a good deal. Best is when they change styles whenever that is.

I wear a few different pairs of 5.10 shoes when im not in gaffs,i will gaff up briefly with them but nothing over 30 minutes worth.

How stiff are the soles. Good on spikes? I looked at the Crow GTX and the Raven 2 GTX also. Not sure what to go with. I was climbing on the Scarpa Fuego and keep breaking the lace hooks. They al smell like a rotting body inside so i thought it's time for a change. Had them for 2 years and still a lot of miles left in them but you know.....want to spend some cash.

The fuegos are very similar to what I am wearing now. I too was concerned about the lace hooks but haven't had an issue yet (3 months). I think the la sportivas have a better lacing system. Check out the makalu, they are a bit lighter than your fuegos but still built to last
