Since this post was originally put up in June...had the client or a neighbor sealed their driveway recently?
I had two sugar maples that were completely defoliated last summer due to their proximity to a parking lot that we had sealed on campus. The volitolized petrochemical caused very similar symptoms to those shown.
There are two pin oaks in the same area that were completely uneffected. Maples seem to be more succeptable to this type of damage, possibly due to larger stomata? or wind direction that day.
Just a thought.
