Monkey tail

I briefly got a glimpse of the monkey's paw used for working a spar. I was wondering if there were any pictures of this set up or if anyone knows how long to make the piece or has any specs for it. It would be great. I know Odis is the one that had demonstrated it to the guy who showed me. Any information would be fantastic.

Are you referring to a Monkey's Fist?

Re: Monkey\'s paw

You're right banjo it's a piece used to tie a blakes into your system so it is adjustable unlike the butterfly and biner. Also it has a safety issue built into it in case the tree splits.

Re: Monkey\'s paw

The term monkey paw and monkey fist are used interchangeably when referring to the knot.

But what is this monkey paw system?

Re: Monkey\'s paw

Well the way it was showed to me it takes place of the butterfly knot and crab when setting up your climbing line on a spar. Basically it's a ring spliced into tech cord but I'm not quite sure how long the tail is supposed to be. So then your rope runs through the ring and around the tree and you leave enough slack so you use that portion of the rope to retrieve your system before making your next cut. So once you have your slack you use the tail of the monkey paw to tie a small blake's hitch so you can cinch it up on the tree.

Re: Monkey\'s paw

Hey Tyler ,the piece you are referring to is the "Monkey Tail" which was developed by Odis Sisk. It is spliced out of 5/16" All Gear Tech Cord which can be spliced quite easily as a hollow braid. I will get some pics up soon of the set up and use of it. So far I am totally impressed with how well it works with removals.

Re: Monkey\'s paw

Monkey's tail!! My bad Rich. Does it matter how long to make the tail though? I saw you demonstrate it and liked the way it looked. Odis is a great guy.

I couldn't agree more !!!

Tyler, the length just depends on how close you want to tie the hitch. We usually make them 48" long which gives you plenty of room to tie the hitch in close or to leave a little room and tie it out further. I will try to get some pics up soon.

Pics of this set up? I'm curious.

WOW !!! If you put a 28 mm aluminum ring at the end of that Monkey's tail you would have the piece. Nice shot !!! I will try to take some pictures this weekend of the Monkey Tail in use and get them up early next week.

Re: Monkey\'s paw

I will be competing at the Internationals, but there will be a few people there that maybe able to show the Monkey Tail Spar System. Bruce Smith, myself or Mr. Rich. Over the past few years I have spent a little time strapped to the side of a spar and I have used numerous systems and as with all, each has advantages and disadvantages. The Monkey Tail Spar Climbing System has been designed to limit the amount of equipment required to simplify the removal process. Rich said he is taking a few good photos and will post them this coming week. If he is unable to have the photos up. I will post the ones I have of it in action. Mr.Rich Hattier of Anchor Bridge Ropeworks is the manufacturer of the Monkey Tail. We will have them up shortly on our web site www.proarbtech.com. We have been a little busy here of late and haven’t gotten them on the site, but they will probably be there this week. We are also retailers of the Raven Packs and I recommend them highly. The largest sized one is the one that I use. I have beaten my Raven Pack through a few comps, two countries and months of tree care, it is awesome. If you have any questions you can contact us by email us through our site www.proarbtech.com

Re: Monkey\'s paw

This is the Monkey Tail. It can be used and retrieved in two ways.
One way is a long tail is left using the working portion of the climbers line. When the climber reaches the destination determined by the length of tail left. The climber lanyards in then releases any pressure from the Gri-Gri, pulls the tail (retrieving the Monkey Tail)then cinches the system taught again at new location. Offering two forms of fall protection One of which is a climbing system.
Second way is the working portion of the climbers system is left short with the connecting link attached. The Fall of the climbers line that is underneath the Gri-Gri is ran through the connecting link on the working portion. I have found this gives a little better release of the Gri-Gri. Once destination is reached a lanyard is used. Tension is released from the Gri-Gri . The now created standing portion is pulled (both sides) this releases /retrieves the Monkey tail. The fall of the rope is released from the connecting link and the system is tailed.
A few Benefits
-Work against the lean
-Small ring will fair lead a friction hitch if one is used instead of the Gri-Gri in case of barber chair
-Can be used with mechanical descender or friction hitch with an 8
-Economical
-Easily retrieves when small stubs are left on tree
