Modded 201 comes alive!!

Yes, the Snelling 201T hotsaw kicks @ss.
I have put it to the test. Such a good saw that I do not even notice it. What 200T? My modded 201 is very nice...

Tool could you put a small vid of it cutting some hardwood to show us firsthand it's performance, ground shots obviously.

You know Roger, that video begs the question....why didn't Stihl produce the 201t to be just like that modded saw?

I wonder if they realise how disappointed most treeclimbers are in the stock 201t?

A friend of mine is thinking about retiring his 201t after only a couple of months due to the poor performance characteristics and pitiful brake handle (he uses the brake a lot when climbing and finds it hard to use the back of his left hand to initiate the brake on, instead having to use the heel of his hand), he's either going to source one of the last 200s or will buy the new Husky. Its a sad state of affairs when a trusted company like Stihl let us all down.

Swing - We don't have 'hardwood' here! Just cedar and fir...
May try to make a video soon!

ROGER!

I have always liked my saws modded. The man that taught me how to work on trees always had a modded saw... Stock saws for the ground crew.

So, in talking to local pros, I get different opinions. As seen on this discussion too. I have been climbing with a 200t for 6 years, before that it was a 335 fully modded. In hearing the reviews of the new 201, I decided to p/u one of the Snelling saws. I need it to be comparable to my good old 200T, would hate less power.

My local saw builder said it was a waste of time, likes the 201 better than the 200. I did not mention that I bought a hot saw from another builder, that would be rude.

While removing trees, I will push my 200 (or 201) as far as it will go. Then pull my 440 (or 372) up to finish off the tree. No 260 or comparable (mid-sized) saw... just the little one and the big one. Pull out the 36" saw if it is that big!
Am I missing something? Would it be better to limb w/ the 200, go to a 260(mod!), then finish up with my 440(mod!)? My buddy in Sedro Wolley wants to build me a 260...

5 White oaks and 2 Eastern cottonwoods later I can comment on the SNelling 201T Man it kicks butt. I too push the 16" bar and chain to the max. I go from the 201 to the 361 and then the 660. I try to not use the bigger saws unless I really have too. I will move to the 361 when it's taking forever to cut through the wood with th 201. Generally its my tree saw so I want to get as much power out of it as I can. It's been a while since I had my 200 so I can't really tell the exact difference. It does seem to be cutting like a champ. Hot saw for sure.

The high revving is back. Let off the throttle and the sdaw idles back up again. Hit the chain brake and pop the trigger and it goes away. Only seems to happen when the saw is super hot. I cut through 3 tanks of gas without stopping except to fuel. Thats when It happened. I can't very well take it back to the saw dealer now. I may have voided the warranty.

Oh on a side not, with the modded 201 I doubled my fuel usage in the saw. I get about half the time as I did and then I have to refuel.

Happy New Year.

Nice, Steve.

Glad to hear you are happy with your 201 (finally)

p.s. - I have not wanted to tell everyone that it uses fuel quick! My ground help told me that it still has half a tank of bar oil in it, each time they re-fill the gas. What the heck, gas is cheap, right?

unatool, are you talking Woods? I ask because they don't do full woods ports.

Personally, I've had 7 woods modded 3 cube saws. The only one I've had (in the last 9 years anyhow) that isn't is a 5100S Dolmar and it has a ported muffler. They're too slow for me to want to run in stock form. The best of the bunch is my 346NE done by tree_slingr, a northern Cali logger. It was the first one he did, and is "only" 54% faster than stock--his next one was even better. It's so good that I love running it in up to 20-24 inch wood as opposed to going to my bigger saws which of course are wicked fast as well, being ported 372's and 7900 Dolmar's. I rarely use my stock 660 with the dual port muffler cover...no need to.

Roger, yep Woods. I used to run all Husky from shop in BHam but they quit doing saws. I drive south to Sedro to get real service.

I have had 2 372's built (muffler mod) and now run a 440 with modifications.

Now, my dumb question: What is WOODS PORT? I have always heard this term - never had the nerve to ask exactly what it means...

So, I am guessing that the shop can only go so far in their mods? Or maybe, I am just not in the inner circle enough! Just a little tree climber at the big Logging Supply store. I am considering a 260 (or maybe 346 ?) that can be the bridge between a 200T and my 440 or 372.

Enlighten us, wise one. :)

I don't know for sure what Woods does. Don't they charge about $125? Prolly includes some jug polishing besides the muffler job. But a full woods port involves, besides a woods mod, at least a decking of the cylinder to increase the compression, enlarging of the intake, exhaust and transfer ports, sometimes some piston timing and carb work....and costs usually $250.00.

I hear the new 261 gives the 346 a run for its money, but won't be as fast when ported. It's also heavier, I think.

The best prices that I know of for Husky is from a shop in NY State. I've had them ship directly to my saw builder. AS long as it's kept quiet, he'll ship across state lines.

The new Husky 562 sounds to be the best strato charged saw yet and best ever in its 60 cc class...but it costs a bunch.

Yes, $125 is how I remember it.

The saw guy @ Woods was talking about the 'old 260' - a model that is recently out of production... He has hoarded up like 20 of them for good customers.

Thanks for the full description of a mod. I may ask him if he can do it up full woods port. Sounds nice. He repairs so much of my equiptment these days, I kinda listen to him. That is how I ended up with mostly Stihl. He only likes the 372 by husqvarna - "all else is junk" he says!

Do you consider the Snelling 201T a full woods port? Maybe 3/4...
Maybe I will ask Snelling to do me a 346?

Well after reading this thread, I'll say I'm a little nervous about being the owner of a new 201. I have had it since Christmas and havent even touched it yet. I am worried it will be a dog.

Let me give a little context here. I have been wanting a 200t for my own personal use for side jobs and that kind of stuff for a long time. Money was always the issue. I am also in the military as a reservist that is currently away from home (been gone since the summer) Apparently my Mom knew I had been wanting one and surprised me with a 201 for christmas. I had assumed it would be just as magnificent as the 200 I have been using at work for years but it doesn't seem like thats the case.

Steve (or anybody else that has a modded 201)- Anybody can drill a hole in the muffler (even me). Could I do the same porting in the muffler and adjust the H and L on the carb within the normal adjustment range for an added boost?

The high rev issues don't sound like something I want to deal with.

Brad Snelling over at ArboristSite. Click 'chainsaws ' and you can find him on a post.
$50 to port, tune.
I know you can drill out the muffler yourself but may not be that simple. Don't know how he tunes the saw, guessing it is more complex than just the H L screws...
