Modded 201 comes alive!!

hype? Nah, just better tool. performance... :)
life of a chainsaw? - worried about it like my bic razor.
lifting the 'bigger saw' up the tree? kinda heavy man

I am clipping coupons for mac n cheese to make up the money I lose killing my little chainsaw with modifications.

whew - long sentence!

Well Unatool I want my saws modded but I live here in Barbados not the U.S where the action is. However since I read your reply I have found a guy here who might be able to do what I need. I just got to research this some more. I like to do my research I don't jump in the deep end until I know for sure I can handle it. P.s maybe Hype was a bad choice of word. Thanks Paul.

Paul, all smiles here. My post was a late night bad sense of humor type.

But seriously, I think it is weird that people worry about how long a mod saw lasts. It is like a fleck of dust in the money spent to run a company. Diesel fuel being the top of the expenditures, then labor, insurance, etc.

Note, I only run a few hot saws for our (3man) crew. Many others are stock... just the saws I use get the extra poop. Maybe it is the bonus I allow myself for being the boss...

They are nice! Even scary

Unatool I am with ya, my groundies(3 man crew also) would NEVER use any saw that I use. All my saws will get modded ( muffler mod only for now ). I will start with 260 and 460 and when I purchase the 660 in the new year that too. I agree with you on the modding and life issue, it really is a small expense considering what you mentioned which is the same here. No offense taken I have very thick skin and a little banter is good for the soul. By chance anyone know about Scott Wojo's mufflers on ebay they look nice and it's a cheap mod at $95 US then riching up the H jet. I am jealous that you live near Samson and my favorite supplier Wesspur. Also Unatool tell me how ya like the new Vortex rope I believe in Samson rope as I use velocity and arbormaster 1/2". Got me Tachyon too but prefer velocity. Paul.

200T - just pull out the screen. It rocks!

Arbormaster for lots of climbs (workhorse rope)
Velocity feels small but we have 4 hanks so we use it on pruning jobs
Tachyon may be my favorite.
Vortex (the new stuff!) I have been climbing hard on my new rope for a month now. It is nice - everything feels right, I just have not quite figured it out yet. Does not like to kick out of my pantin (maybe this is good!).

I have a mod 440 that I use in big trees. My old hotsaw was a 372 - the main guy uses that now. I then have 2 395 (36") husky saws - but I never thought of porting them. They are already so big!

p.s - we got a muffler of ebay for an older 372. It made the saw scream! Almost too scary, loud, crew loves

-Steve :)

Thanks Steve, good info all screens out already first thing I do with every saw purchase. Wish I could get Husky down here as I have heard their mid-size saws rock. Will try Vortex in the new year along with rope wrench and other goodies. Also will be going to England for xmas will see if I can get a look at the husky and get some demos. Thanks Paul.

Correct me if I am wrong... I believe there is NO WARRENTY for the business use of a stihl chainsaw - only personal use.
That is how I remember it from years back. Of coarse, my saw shop always writes up a warrenty in MY NAME, does not mention the company.

I think the reason pro saws for US distribution are 'de-tuned' is mostly emissions rather than service life. If you raise the RPMs at FT I'm guessing wear would increase but the limiters are for hi and lo mixture, not tach.

This thread makes me much or comfortable with the end of the MS200T.

Jamin, Paul -
I connected with the guy on AS for a modded 201. Very nice

I have gotten to use it in some decent trees in the last week and it is good. I am starting to understand the feel and differences from the MS200T. This Wednesday, I climb a 100ft Fir, limb it on way up, top it, then blow out spar in three pieces... what we consider the ABC's of tree removal here. I have done this job a couple thousand times. It should give me a nice event to review the performance of the 201.

p.s. - it feels lighter, a touch more balance.

A lot of talk about this 201 but fact is I was at a GTG recently with Brad and the thing wasn't even mentioned .

Also a lot of much ado about modified saws .I personally have never seen where it shortened the life of same myself .If anything it improved them .That's a personal choice though .

I recently did a thread on two forums of what I think is eating up 200T's and it's basically the type of crankshaft bearings which knock the seals out causing them to burn up the cylinders .Fact being if I'm not mistaken it's the only time anybody ever put pics of splitting the cases on a 200T on the internet .

It is nice! I did the big job and loved my Snelling 201T.

I can not tell if I like it MORE than a 200T of if I am just thinking it is better. Just a great saw, no complaints - cuts thru the big wood w/o pause. Nice throttle command. The balance is a little different than a 200 and I think I like it.

Get a modded one and you will not complain...

p.s. - tell us more Connally!

Well, I was in school for 2 weeks and then most of the holiday jobs cancelled so I finally go back to tree work tomorrow. I did use the saw on a big oak pruning the 1 day I did work. The wood was super rock hard so I really can't get a feel for the cutting. Even the 200T would have worked it's butt off on this tree. Probably should have used a bigger saw. Anyway, it has great throttle response, not too loud compared to the 200 with the spark arrestor removed. I've gotta admit, I'm kind of fond of a loud climbing saw. Probably pretty stupid because it just makes it worse for my hearing. Just sounds powerful.... It it a tough cold start but warms up and runs like a champ. I have no doubt this will perform as well as, or out perform the 200. I was totally pleased with the job Brad did on my saw. I got it back quick and it looks like he broke the saw down and cleaned it when he had it. Well worth the money. If I didn't have it modded, I would not recommend the 201T to anybody. If you bought one, consider the mod. If not wait for the new Husky. I'm still considering the new Husky when it comes out. I'd just like to try it out. Anyway, i'll continue to post updates and let you all know what I think. If Brad can do all my saws, I would consider it! He's quite talented. I think Unitool has probably, or hopefully, used his more than I have in the last few weeks. Our focus has been to get the chipper back in shape that got dumped off the bucket truck. All it needs now is a paint job.

Steve
