Mistakes & consequences for employees.

we give\ our employees 50 dollar a month equipment and 20 dollar a month safty bonus paid at end of year. if i catch them with out safty glasses ill ding them 10 bucks, chaps 20. if they break something carelessly their bonus pays for it. if 2 guys tear a gutter off and it cost me a hundred bucks they each get dinged 50, thats to encourage the groundie to pay attention and maybe speak up when something doesnt look right

How about this policy?

You pay for your mistake, I'll pay for my mistake.

"The work description said brush pile of bradford pear, all leaves brown. Also a small amount of dogwood in the pile.

They finally saw a brush pile on that street. They proceed to chip the pile and no one looks at the house number. They get almost through the pile, over an hour,"

I hope it was more than one Pear. If not I think you should fire them for taking over a hour to chip a Pear.

First, I would say that we are all human, we have all made mistakes and need to remember that maybe we screwed up a quote or dropped a tree where we didn't want it ........
So if it's minor then just explain your situation to them and hope they make up the 152 dollars which is really cheap when you consider what they make you daily.
Secondly, I learned a while ago when my father owned the business, that employees don't look at thing the way we do because they don't pay the bills and thats the difference between an employee and an owner.(its the cost of being in business)
If these guys are truly good workers then don't chase them out the door over short money.
Third, I would advise my guys that things like safety gear are personal choices and if OSHA shows up they are responsible for the fines. It's really the same as a speeding ticket or not buckling up. These are all personal choices and if they choose not too where chaps or a hard hat and you require it, it becomes their fine. If they are cut and OSHA is asking why they dont have the proper safety gear on you say " I require it and last I knew he was wearing it"
You can't possibly control everything all the time it's not possible. You then tell the employee next time he's caught not wearing the proper apparel they will be dismissed.

The guy I work for right now is pretty good when it comes to these sorts of issues. We've had days when we were very productive and got more done than was estimated, I still get the same amount of pay. There are other days when it takes much longer, and I still make the same amount of pay.

Furthermore, if I break something (which I have) or if I mess up the equipment (which I have), there's not really much of a repremand. He knows that myself and the crew work really hard and care about the work so when s@#t happens (which it does), that's the cost of being in business. Even if it's a dumb one.

Now if the employee or employees have other issues going on, that's a different story. But you said they were good guys and hard workers. I think everyone has had their major brain farts, like chipping the wrong brush pile

BTW, why in the world are you making 13.00/hr as an owner Xman?

On one more note, I've noticed that in the more relaxed work environment (with less fear of being repremanded), I make WAY fewer mistakes.

In other companies where I was constantly worried or 'on edge' about making a mistake or 'being watched' I found myself messing up left and right. Think about the environment that you are creating as the owner for your employees. They are the true 'meat' of the business, and thus the most important aspect to take care of and look after.
