Missed the \'03 TxTCC

I'm in Boston at a workshop wo I missed out on the TxTCC. My folks, brother and nieces got to see mky Texas brothers though. This is what my Mom wrote tome:

Just back from the Tree Climb with Jim & Girls. Well organized and
Laura Miller, Dallas Mayor, did a great tree climb with having climbed
only 4 time before---(Good teacher, Ken Hauser.) New trophy was neat.
Guy from Austin's wife recognized us and said they missed seeing you.
Did get to talk to Mark, too.

Love Mom

Tomorrow evening I'm off to the UK to spend some time with Mr. Pez learning about arbo training and practices.

Who won the TxTCC?

Re: Missed the \'03 TxTCC

It was cold, windy, and I was tired so I left after the masters. One of the guys from Arborilogical won.....again.

It was my first time to compete and won't be my last. Advise:::::DON'T try anything that is new or kinda new to you........:(

Re: Missed the \'03 TxTCC

I don't have all the results, but Nicholas Carlos of Arborlogical Services, I think was the big winner of the day. Three time Texas Champion!

I had the priveledge of helping the SSA students from Texas A&M. They have only recently started their SSA Chapter and are already doing great things. They organized and ran our Kids Climb and did a great job. Attached is a picture of Jeff Ledet, the chapter president and Mr. Sullivan, four years old and our first climber of the day.

Re: Missed the \'03 TxTCC

I got to meet Nathan and Tim (Heartland). Always good to get to put a face with the name. Got to talk with Mark Chisolm again, have decided that the nicest people I know are tree people. After a bit of an overheard conversation, I looked up and found myself face to face with a younger version of Tom D. Got to have a nice conversation with Tom's younger brother Jim.

Didn't get to see the Masters Challenge, I was breaking down the tree elevator from the kids climb and minding the gear. I did get to see some of the Mayors climb. Gained a great deal of respect for our Dallas Mayor, there is no quit in that women. The tree was set up like a work climb event and she fought her way through.

I had a great time and can't wait for next year.

Re: Missed the \'03 TxTCC

I'm finally caught up enough from the weekend to post the results. All I have is a list of raw numbers--points won, no times. The scoring program let us down again, but our great volunteers (the scoring crew was headed by Steve Barrett of Arborilogical in Dallas) got things tallied in good time nonetheless.

As Louie said, first place went to Nicolas Martinez--his third TX title.

Second (and a very close second it was--I would have called it the other way) went to Francisco Ruiz Carlos.

Third and fourth went to Leoncio Ruiz Carlos and Jimmy Saucier, who both climbed well but coudn't recover from missing their first throws.

Event winners:
Work Climb
1st--Bill Farrell (his first competition, too)
2nd--Francisco Ruiz Carlos (Dallas)
3rd--Leoncio Ruiz Carlos (Dallas)

Aerial Rescue
1st--Nicolas Martinez (Dallas)
2nd--Kelley Sims (Amarillo)
3rd--Angel Ruiz Carlos (Dallas)
Belayed Speed Climb
1st--Jimmy Saucier
2nd--Leoncio
3rd--Abram Zies (I think this was his first year too)
Footlock
1st Keith Babberney (20.6 sec by at least one judge)
2nd--Jimmy Saucier
3rd--Leoncio

Throwline
1st--Willy Ruiz Carlos (Dallas), with 14 points
2nd-4th were all tied at 13 pts, but without times I don't remember who won. They were Bill Farrell, Leoncio, and Angel.

And bonehead of the year award goes to yours truly. My first event was AR, and there was a nice fat crotch right above the dummy that was perfect for stepping off the access line (nice, clear footlock) and tying in with a second rope. I figured it at 20-25 feet and decided to use my short rope (maybe 70-75 feet) I was following some great advice from Tom D. to great effect. I wasn't sure if I should try his suggestion from this board and clip my lanyard above dummy's knot as a tender since I hadn't tried it before, but it worked great and I was smoking down (smoothly, of course) for the landing when a judge waved me off yelling "stop, stop, stop!" Turns out the crotch was a biit higher than I thought (or my rope shorter) and I ran out of rope about six feet off the ground. DQ, lost 50 possible points. Couldn't get my head back in the day and had a mediocre performance in work climb. Like Nico said, "It's always something with you." Oh, well, next year.

Otherwise a great day. Met up with Mark and a lot of TCC friends from the past 8 years, met a few new up-and-comers, enjoyed the sunshine despite the cold wind Nathan and Louie mentioned. All teh events went smoothly--great job of organization by Guy LeBlanc, with lots of help from Steve Houser, Kevein Bassett, and the usual suspects.
