Hey All,

Am headed to Sacramento in Feb to visit a friend and I thought it might be a good opportunity to try a tall tree climb.

Not looking for anything crazy, just want to go up a tree more than 130 feet. Simple Bragging rights for a acheiving a personal best is all.

Bascially I'm looking for ideas, suggestions and maybe even a "guide" to get us going.

ThanX in Advance!

I'll bet moss could find you a tree from his livingroom in JP. He's good like that. He may even know some folk out there.

Hey... unfortunately I don't know any climbers in the Sacramento area. Took a quick look around the general area with Google satellite view... immediate Sacramento city and surrounding area is heavily cultivated flat farmland. May be some tallish trees in city parks or along the river (cottonwoods). Had to look west to some state land to find anything resembling forest, in that direction it looks primarily oak forest, no real tall stuff. That's from a satellite photo. Going east into the mountains there's potential for decent ponderosa and sugar pine but the general area has been heavily cut. Second and third growth sugar pine can still be quite tall, white pine on steroids. Best tall trees are going to be PNW coast range and west side of the Sierra Nevada mountains southeast of Sacramento.

Heck if you in the general area you have to go visit some Giant Sequoia down by the Fresno area, King's Canyon etc.

About an hour and a half from Sacto in the foothills, I know of a number of giant Sugar Pines (6-8' dbh) and Ponderosas. Thats up in Bixler's neighborhood....he may know of them, too.

Awesome! Thanks for checking in Ward, I hoped an eastcoaster like me trying to figure out what's on the ground in Sacramento would flush out some local expertise.

I love sugar pine, those things are incredible when they get big. A tall ponderosa is quite a treat too.
