Looking for change...

No one could ever pay me an hourly wage ever....I have won over a lot of clients who let me just freakin tree their trees...who hires a plumber and tells them how to plumb....

This is one of the mysteries of arbo work. Car mechanics/technicians have The Book...If they get the job done at book rate the do OK. If they know tricks or are good they make out. What other service profession works by bid?

Plumbers, electricians and carpenters. Every job is different depending on the scope, goals and what they are starting with. I’m sure there are more, but these are three I have used recently.

@TCtreeswinger its a tough place to be falling out of love of the one thing in life that has taken so much of your time. I’ve been at it for 20 years and have had more than a few spot occasions where I was ready to throw in the towel. A couple times it was simply just a change in scenery needed to find my way again. A couple times it took someone smacking me around a bit saying “what are you thinking”. The key I think is to have just enough change to keep life fresh. Your idea of a small preservation crew sounds cool, but you may get hungry in the winter months. We try to focus on preservation but without the removals we wouldn’t get on many of the cool properties that we do some of our best work.
I wish you all the best!

Yeah i got to thinking about how the hourly wouldnt work the best for the industry. When i was in canada food gas smokes and beer were all twice as expensive as back here. Im at a crossroads with what to do. Thankfully i dont have to make a quick decision.

I kinda like my area because the snow shuts me down for 3-4 months every year. In the past I have worked my winters on oil rigs as a roughneck or doing construction with some of the contractors that I felled trees for during the season.
It gives me a break from the normal grind and allows me to reset. Perhaps you just need time to reset?
Change is scary but usually for the better, I wish you well whatever you do.

Yeah i actually started tree work after going to log building school id totally do that but im just not quite north enough. No companies in my metro.

I can get you a job here in Shuswap Lake at North American Log Crafters. He builds for people all around the world. They ship the logs with a setup crew anywhere around the globe. He builds real fine log homes. Let me Know if that sounds like something you’d be interested in, I’d be happy to connect you.

2 week vacation to maine end of September should give me some time to think

A Maine trip for me is a great way to unwind a bit. We normally go up in the spring (2 months into our busy season) and it’s great. No cell, no contact with the outside world for 7 days. I just tell my wife to “handle it” just don’t sink the boat! This year we skipped the spring due to a very good opportunity the third week in September in the great north woods. I’m really looking forward to the quite time. But I know when I get back it’s gonna be go go go until Christmas.
Where are you headed up there? It’s a big state, it’s 5 hrs for us to get to Maine and 6-7 more to get to the camp we normally go to!

Thank you that is a generous offer and its appreciated. Unfortunately at this point relocation is not doable due to some family health concerns.

Squirrel we are headed to acadia. We have a free cabin to stay at near bar harbor approximately 3 hrs north of portland. We plan to rent a jeep and do some exploring/hammock camping. Any must sees while were there?

I hear bar harbor is nice, not my scene though. L.LBean in Freeport I think. Kitery (sp) has the trading post which is cool. We normally travel 6 more hours UP into the north woods. More bears the people up there. This trip we are headed to western Maine near canook land @Stephen Moore. Headed up after one of those Canadian moose that needs adopted :).
Get out in the country a bit around dawn or dusk and you might see a few of the beasts. Then again maybe not, that is the hunting season for the state.

Good luck.

Same spot, waiting on a call to join fire protection union. I was forced back into the field full time after we lost a climber and ive damn near walked off the job a day a week since then.
