What do you all think? Is it better to buy a chip body from one of the manufacturers, buy a used one or have some local outfit build one?

Be super careful with who you have build it, and spec out exactly what you want. The company who built mine took triple the time to build it than they quoted me. It came out ok, but I wasnt super impressed with the aluminum top. For a 17k build I wish the would have added some angles to make it look more sleek. They also made it out of 1/4 aluminum plate which basically cancels out any weight savings the aluminum gave me. They only had one guy that could weld aluminum, and it was their first time doing a removable top. What do you all think? Of course it could have a different engine. They put C7 cats, 5.9 Cummins, vt365's (6.0) and V10 gasers in those trucks that year and maybe even more.@tc262 do you think that truck could have a different engine in it other than a 6.0? Seems like the 650 series and larger puts them in a different category for engine options. I wouldn't be surprised to see a cummins in it.
My F650 has 5.9 Cummins and Allison auto both reliable and highly desirably in that truck and it's was listed that way. There are a lot of good body company's out there but like Gorman said it takes a while to get one they always seem to be behind. You can look for a used body when you decided how big of a body your going to want. Fab shops are expensive and don't Mass produce chipper body's so it may take awhile to have it made. Another good option which probably be cheaper and have fastest turn around is get a grain or landscaper body and fab a top i did that and it came out obove my expectation. That is a 6 liter PowerstrokeThe F650 has the VT365 6.0 Does this engine have any of the powerstroke's issues?
Nice rig. Where did you find the grain body? Got a 88 F650 needing a body. Been on the look out for a 14'er for a while now. I'm upstate from you.View attachment 41800 My F650 has 5.9 Cummins and Allison auto both reliable and highly desirably in that truck and it's was listed that way. So the dealer was telling me that this has the international version. It uses the same long block as the powerstroke. But there are differences. Is he telling me the truth? That is a 6 liter Powerstroke
They can be great motors or the worst lemon you've ever had
It's a Godwin body fabricated two removable tops.Nice rig. Where did you find the grain body? Got a 88 F650 needing a body. Been on the look out for a 14'er for a while now. I'm upstate from you.
Yeah I noticed that one earlier. All the good ones are so far away. I could only find 3 within a days drive. Here is a cheap truck that has tool boxes, good chip capacity, dosnt look too bad, and is know for being pretty reliable. Great truck to upgrade to and continue to save money for a newer truck.

I agree with you. Big headache trying to get everything to come together when you have to have things built. Then it ends up taking way longer to get it done, costs more than planned, doesn't turn out the way you hoped and sidetracks a person. So I'll definitely keep lookingOh yeah!! I hear ya on that. I hate trying to get away to go look at equipment. Its nice when you have something close by. But, if you can make the trip it might be well worth it in the long run. Turn, key and you have what you want with no waiting. If truck turns out to be in decent mechanical shape.
They all came from international, the only difference I'm aware of is the computer programming. So the dealer was telling me that this has the international version. It uses the same long block as the powerstroke. But there are differences. Is he telling me the truth?
