Looking for a chip truck

What do you all think? Is it better to buy a chip body from one of the manufacturers, buy a used one or have some local outfit build one?

Be super careful with who you have build it, and spec out exactly what you want. The company who built mine took triple the time to build it than they quoted me. It came out ok, but I wasnt super impressed with the aluminum top. For a 17k build I wish the would have added some angles to make it look more sleek. They also made it out of 1/4 aluminum plate which basically cancels out any weight savings the aluminum gave me. They only had one guy that could weld aluminum, and it was their first time doing a removable top.

That truck seems too expensive. I would guess the body will run you 10-15k since you have the hoist already. Then you would want it painted I assume. I would guess you will be in the 35k marker. Ive seen nice 14-16'ers all set up for that kinda money. Plus if its a 6.0 you will have to delete it.

If you order a brand new body it will take a while to get to you. I would just have a fab shop build you one nice and simple. You may want to source another place for painting.

I ordered a body from Iroquois and it took 4 months to come in. It was a solid body but it didn't warrant the time it took. A local shop can build you one in less than half the time.

@tc262 do you think that truck could have a different engine in it other than a 6.0? Seems like the 650 series and larger puts them in a different category for engine options. I wouldn't be surprised to see a cummins in it.
Of course it could have a different engine. They put C7 cats, 5.9 Cummins, vt365's (6.0) and V10 gasers in those trucks that year and maybe even more.
It's a dealer, if it had a C7 or a Cummins in it they would have advertised it. Notice they mentioned it has an Allison Trans. They purposely leave out any negative info in their adds. Looking at it again I bet it's a V10 since they didn't list that it's a diesel.

IMG_0154.webp My F650 has 5.9 Cummins and Allison auto both reliable and highly desirably in that truck and it's was listed that way. There are a lot of good body company's out there but like Gorman said it takes a while to get one they always seem to be behind. You can look for a used body when you decided how big of a body your going to want. Fab shops are expensive and don't Mass produce chipper body's so it may take awhile to have it made. Another good option which probably be cheaper and have fastest turn around is get a grain or landscaper body and fab a top i did that and it came out obove my expectation.

Nice rig. Where did you find the grain body? Got a 88 F650 needing a body. Been on the look out for a 14'er for a while now. I'm upstate from you.

That is a 6 liter Powerstroke
They can be great motors or the worst lemon you've ever had
So the dealer was telling me that this has the international version. It uses the same long block as the powerstroke. But there are differences. Is he telling me the truth?

Yeah I noticed that one earlier. All the good ones are so far away. I could only find 3 within a days drive.

Oh yeah!! I hear ya on that. I hate trying to get away to go look at equipment. Its nice when you have something close by. But, if you can make the trip it might be well worth it in the long run. Turn, key and you have what you want with no waiting. If truck turns out to be in decent mechanical shape.

I agree with you. Big headache trying to get everything to come together when you have to have things built. Then it ends up taking way longer to get it done, costs more than planned, doesn't turn out the way you hoped and sidetracks a person. So I'll definitely keep looking

They all came from international, the only difference I'm aware of is the computer programming.

When your business starts to pump out cash, that is when you get trucks custom built. I am looking at getting a chip truck built for the end of 2017. But, I have the time, the money to spend, and I currently have a chip truck that is meeting my current needs. Its hard when you need that truck immediately to wait for it to be built.

This looks like a decent truck in seattle, I figure seattle isnt too far away for you....ITE always has quality equipment. Don't quote me but I believe 2007 was the last year of the 6.0, maybe 2006. I have a 2005 6.0 excursion and its been very good to me. Make sure all the mods have been done or at least try to use it as a bargaining chip when purchasing.

If it were me, I'd get a truck with as MUCH capacity as possible. Less trips to dump = equals more time/ $$.
