Largest tree in jersey.

Man that snow looks miserable. You're tougher than me.

I agree about Tulips being kinda dicey, especially the declining ones. I don't hesitate to set anchors in two separate crotches for a rigging point if the wood's going to be big.

Nice work, I like the wooden fire truck.

no sir, not tougher, I just enjoy the added adversity. I'm an underdog kinda guy and when the odds aren't in my favor that's when do my best. Wind, cold, snow. I used these to just push myself through. Sounds corny. Maybe it is. But it works for me everytime.

What was your choice? Cry "Uncle!" from the tree? Nope. I hear ya though, that it does force you to draw on your reserves and focus.

This is the basic model of Outward Bound.

LOL!

(I better not say anymore, or risk hurting your feelings.)

Your lucky Hollenreich is temp banned or he'd be tearing you up on your title for this post, now that you put up pictures.

gday,im not real good with imperial- metric conversions but 100 foot is ,i think, about 30 metres.
my eyes could be playing tricks on me but the tree dosnt look nearly that tall!
dont envy working in the snow though!

No offical measure. Just took my brand new 150ft line, threw it to the top when I climbed up and asked what kind of footage I had left on the ground. Human crane counted arm lengths and came up with 20ft. I took 5 ft off the total height due to possible added length because of the rope bending with the stalk.

I'm not saying it was the tallest, shoot I know it wasn't, but I stand behind my height I posted. What reason do I have to make it up? To make myself seem like a better climber? I've worked more difficult jobs at 25ft then I ever have at 100. The height just rattles the nerves a little more, at least for me it does.

As far as the convertion goes, haha I'll take your word on that one my friend cause I have no clue

Ft I have been watching this thread since the original post. To be perfectly honest with you I had a few conversations about this. I live in mid Jersey where there are some real big tulip poplars. Never have I thought that I was in the largest tree. When I interviewed with X down in Md. I was amazed at how many tulip poplars there were that rivaled or beat the ones I grew up on. I naively thought that if I went south the trees would be at least slightly smaller. You know working the oaks in northern Jersey and tulips and oaks in mid Jersey gets a little old at times. I guess I am rambling because the name of the thread has become a bit of a deception. These trees are an average day for many. Good job and no disrespect. These are just my thoughts. I am sure there will be many who will berate me for expressing my thoughts but without them this would be a boring site. So again good job, I assume nothing was broken and no-one got hurt. In the end that is what really matters.

Good job Man , I have a backyard full of 130+ Polars and Ash , I'm in Pa. though. They are all healthy and I see no problem with them getting much taller . My Dads company back in the early fifty's took down some huge 150+ 175+ Poplars. How tall can those trees grow if left alone ?

come even further south cuttenwolf, i don't know if you guys have been in joyce kilmer memorial forrest or not, but its in north carolina and there are some beastly tulip poplars there. its a virgin stand of timber, mainly i think because they couldn't get any logging equipment to the trees. there are some enormous hemlocks there too. most of those are dying or dead from adelgid problems. i'm sure there are some poplars approaching 200' in kilmer and i know that the nations largest eastern hemlock is in the great smokey mountains national forrest in north carolina/tennessee, i'm pretty sure it goes over 170'. the nations largest loblolly pine is here in south carolina, down near columbia believe it or not in the congaree national forrest. it is like 169'. the average canopy height in congaree is 125' and that includes oaks, sweetgums, persimmons, maples, cherries, pines and bald cypress. awesome place.

Thanks for your kind words cuttin and riggs. If it's the title that is causing a fuss, I originally started this thread looking for the tallest tree in jersey to see what it's height was. In no way do I think the trees I removed are the largest, I was just wondering what the largest was and if mine was compairable. That's all. No disrespect and sorry for the confusion.

yeah, it's basically the title. Well, and the comments about being axhausted and stuff; like you were a Spartan that just got finished with a days battle with the Persians.

If someone comes off like they just did the tallest and baddest tree around, then I see pictures of it and it's basically something we do every week in the busy season, then it makes me want to say, "ahhh come on!".

On the other hand, if you had posted this story and said, "hey, here's some pictures of some pretty tall tulips we did this week", then me and I think most people would react differently.

Do you understand?

It's great that you posted this and the pictures, nice to see others work. It's just the way it was presented.

That's all.

If I posted a big oak removal and said, "I think I just did the biggest tree removal in the US". The Euc. guys on the West Coast would laugh at me.

Good job on some tall tulips close to a building man.

Just had a problem with how I thought it was told.

Hope you won't hold a grudge.

Nope no grudges but yeah I was tired. With it being a whopping 15-20 degrees outside the first day and it snowing the second with colder tempertures as well and the fact that I lugged around either a 460 or 660 for 60 feet of each stalk and me being the only climber, yeah, I was tired and I deserve to say as much.

It's not everyday I have to climb a hundred feet to get into my work area, especially having to do it twice(kudos to those that have to, we just don't have that kind of work around here). Am I saying I'm the toughest climber out there? Absolutely not, in fact I stated the opposite just a few posts up. I merely showed and spoke of my personal struggles I felt while doing the job. I just don't know why it would bother anyone. If I climbed a 20ft pine and it was the hardest tree I've done to date and expressed as much, why would anyone need to step in and say that they've done bigger? To prove they are a better climber? To show everyone else they are a better climber?my work speaks for itself in volumes. It says Ive come along way and yet have so much further to go. My inexperience shows in every photo and a lot of my posts. I like it. It makes me more approachable to those who are where I was a short short short time ago.

Sorry if the post name confusses some. It originally started to see what the largest tree was and spun into something more about my own job. And seeing that I started the post and I'm the one that built upon the same post I see nothing wrong with it.

I agree you are approachable and perhaps this is why you were approached. You have a good attitude and did a fine job. No need to apologize, this is just a few guys bantering back and forth in a civilized manner. I know this may not be the norm for the site, but it should be.

Nice work Marc. I would be tired too after removing those two trees. Not because they are any different than I do either, but because I always try to do them as fast and safe as possible, so I am almost always tired! Plus that weather!

FWIW, Tulips like that always look smaller until you get up in them. I used one for a second tie in this week and set my 200' line only to find it wasn't quite long enough. It wasn't set in the very top and the center lead broke out years ago. They are easily misjudged.

If your new "avatar" is from the job, nice choice on who ever picked the reason for the removals.

The post title did confuse me. As, it probably did many others, as this thread has over 1135 views! with a title like that they are expecting to see some huge freakin' trees; or the biggest in Jersey.

you already said sorry for the confusion, so no need to say it again after this post of mine.

I'd approach anyone Cuttenwolf, you know that.

yes, family tree is approachable. But I actually would rather converse with someone that would fight back like Hollenriech. Family tree just makes me feel bad when he responds like this. It's easier with Hollen and maybe I respect Hollenriech more though for that.

family tree is a nice guy.

back to the job....

why would they give you a heavy 660 to use on those trees? a 460 can run a 32" bar just fine.

so, that job took more than one day?

thanks for being so darn kind

Hey X, if the first post was read then it is very clear that it wasn't the largest tree and that wasn't how it was presented. Cut the guy some slack. He's got 3 years experience and doing big trees in cold, crappy weather takes it out of you. Specially at the end of the week.

my 2 cents....

It does get easier with time FT....
