kid sized saddles

For me, mine are older 9 and 8 - they have to be able to tie a safety knot - this is important as they think they can ZIP down the line when they are done climbing.

I Put one in and then ask that every few feet they put one in.

Next, they will learn how to tie a few more knots. Here we only use body muscle to get up that tree.

PLUS - they want to climb, they have to carry thier own gear.

jz - learning all the time

Finished a nice side job, took the cash and bought some gear for the lads. Thanks for the inputs everyone. I ended up getting the Trango Junior, favoring the body harness, and a mini-Petzl helmet. My boy liked the blue one.

Can't wait for the weekend, maybe even a photo opportunity...

I have a 5 year old and we have the Petzel Ouistiti for him. He loves it. My husband usually hoists him up the tree and lets him climb around for a bit. He also likes to swing a little on the ropes. It really is very secure and he loves being up in a tree. If any of us are out rec climbing or even practicing throwballing he has to be right in the middle of it trying to help and be a part of it. www.backcountry.com has this harness for $49.90. My husband just picked our son's up at the local Vermeer shop.

My daughter Becca, who is one of the youngest TreeBuzz members has finally outgrown her Petzl full body harness.

I want to get her a kids New Tribe saddle, but I don't think they make one with side d-rings.

She's been climbing since she was 8 years old and just turned 12. She wants to start working next summer with me as a climber doing pruning jobs, so I need to find a good saddle now.

Chris,

NT will custom build a harness for you in any configuration you can mix and match. Check to see if they have side dees in the fixed variety rather than floppers.

They might even have some custom colors to make the harness.

Also...
Since she's 12 years old she probably won't fit into an NT kids harness. They have a size small NT Basic harness w/side D's off the shelf so you won't need the custom work if you don't want to go that route. Check the sizing chart on the NT web site to determine what will fit her.

Kid had a hoot with dad in his first climb. I wasn't sure how he'd react when the time came. We carried our gear over to a nice limby Red maple, and he decided it was a good time to play in the sandbox. Figuring he would warm up to it I climbed up to set our lines, and by the time I was on the ground he was all fired up and ready to go.

Good lesson on expectations regarding kids. I guessed he would tighten up once his weight was in his rope, but all he wanted was to go up! We ended up about 25' up, where he sat in my lap and we looked at leaves and birds for about another 15 minutes. My wife couldn't pick who had the biggest smile. Logan says to me, "Dad, you're just like Paul Bunyan!" (with Felco #2's), and I says to he,"no Logan, YOU are like Paul Bunyan", which seems to be about the biggest compliment one can pay to my 3 year old.

Anyway, despite my constant tendency to over-complicate rigging, I kept it simple and it worked well. Logan didn't really climb, but was more or less hauled up on his own basic tail-tied system. I Blake's hitched the tail extra long so the hitch stayed beyond his reach.

The only thing I'd do differently is to switch friction devices. I put his line through the old leather hose, and mine through the rings. He's only 40 lbs., but that doesn't haul up very well from below, I think I wasn't explaining well enough that he was climbing, not just going for a ride. Maybe next time through the rings I'll haul the lump up a bit easier.

I'll try to get some pictures posted soon. For clarity I'm the guy with the beard, he has a bit of a resemblance.

Take care,
Ryan.
