Kask visors

Good evening all,

I moved over to a new company and there awesome by the way very nice to find a good home. I’ll be getting a kask helmet and was thinking of purchasing the visor for it I’m curious if anyone can chime in on their functionality really hoping on a less foggy type deal and that it’s worth to purchase.

Thank you

I don't like them, the only time I flip mine down is if I'm running the chipper or making a cut directly over my head with the sawdust discharging straight down. Other then that I just trust my safety squints will be enough

*that last bits a joke, I ALWAYS wear Z87 glasses, even when I am using the visor.

Everything fogs up, visor or glasses
Now if they made a well thought out not goofy as fuck slap on mesh Kask visor I would give that a try.

I liked how well the faceshield worked but I got tired of them getting scratched. I tried polishing with white toothpaste. That worked for some of the scratches. They didn't fog on me very much even without using some anti-fog product. I sewed a bag out of some fleece material with nap on the inside but a hard shell. The helmet was never tossed into my gear bag without being bagged.

I liked the kask visor far better than safety glasses, but less than the protos mesh visor. The kask visor fogs up in the rain but not usually from sweat, so I found it helped a lot to use Cat Spit on the inside and RainX on the outside.

Mine never got too scratched up since I was always careful about where I put it down, but the bigger problem I had was sap blasting it until it was opaque. Took a lot of elbow grease to keep clean, especially if you let it build up for a few days.

Most of all I think it's just really nice to have eye pro that is easy to put on and take off, that you can't lose, and that offers really good protection for your face.

@Tom Dunlap: so I’m assuming keeping the helmet in some sort of fabric bag is the way to go (no more throwing it in the truck)

@ flying squirrel: cat spit? And gotcha I’m gonna try the rainX also did anyone’s happen to be mirrior tint im wondering how the vision is with that one

It sure helps. THe scratches I got were from branches while I climbed.

The helmet came with a thin nylon bag but it wasn't protective at all. A person could go to a thrift store and buy a fleece vest to make a helmet bag. Soft on the inside and touch on the outside.

Since I stopped using faceshields I learned about polishing the plastic lenses of vehicle head light assemblies. I might try some of those techniques. One is to carefully use heat from a hot air gun or propane torch to melt the scratches. I'd use my hot air gun though. Polish with white toothpaste...not gel. What would I have to loose?

They are Z87.1 rated.

Read Page 61 and do a word-search for 'Z87.1' in the manual

Cleaning sap is a function of the solvent used. The face shield is polycarbonate which is a very common material for face shields. Try using peanut butter or olive oil then soap and water.
According to the instructions you’re not supposed to use any type of cleaner on the visor. Just warm water.

They must have been ANSI rated in the past few years. They definitely were not when I purchased mine.

For sap on a visor (or just about anything including climbing rope) I use a clean white very soft cloth with a little 99% isopropanol USP (not the watered down rubbing alcohol stuff). Should be safe for polycarbonate but try it on a bit of the visor by the hinge first. Safe for sap dots on the paint of your restored Morgan too!

Really helps to clean sap off while it's fresh or new - let it harden a couple of days in the sun and it's way more of a job on anything as it dehydrates.

Sap on gear is a visitation of the dark one upon this earth . . . . . sigh.

I’ve had Kask helmets fir years...notice the advertising? They’ve been Z87.1 compliant all along

Regardless of what people discuss on TreeBuzz, if eye protection doesn’t have a Z87.1 marking on it then it is not compliant. That’s the standard from the Z133. I’m very happy that Kask visors have met this standard now.

There is a historical timeline that needs to be noted. The Z133 requirement went into effect at a time after manufacturer's spec sheets had been in place. There was plenty of discussion at the Z meeting about the 'grandfathering' in cases like this. There is a LOT of gear in use that was made before labeling was required. The gear isn't dangerous to use nor required to be taken out of service. It does make life easier having gear labeled.

It's -7*f at noon. If it warms up some I might go out to my shop to see if I still have the old face scratched faceshields and look for the Z87.1 marking. Even if they aren't I know they are compliant because of communication with Eugene K at the time I started using Kask helmets.

I bought Protos glasses for my new protos lid. They are great. I use them for cuts above head, or when my bar is sending sawdust at me. The mesh faceshield is fogless, of course, and I'm not too concerned about getting pitch on it (never noticed pitch on it...). When I'm done cutting, I push the glasses up into the lid. Since my glasses are only deployed during the cut, they do not have time to fog up. I live in Florida, so there is generally high humidity in the air. The glasses do not get scratched because the mesh or the lid are protecting them. I do not drop them to the ground (saw a glasses dropped dq in comp climbing two years ago, and of course it's also bad to drop eye pro while actually working...). If the glasses get a smudge, I can just not wear them. It's usually pretty easy to work through a smudge. Shortly after I started using them, I became adept at raising and lowering them without smudging them. The Protos eyewear system has become the main reason I prefer the Protos helmet. I think the Kask helmet is great, so please don't misread me. I just really like the Protos eyewear system.
