just started learning

I just started learning about tree climbing. What length of rope do you prefer your personal lanyard to have available?

welcome to the buzz. it is a good place to learn. you will see the term "low and slow" a lot. i would suggest using the bare minimum lanyard until you get used to working and moving through the tree before jumping to a longer lanyard. my current edition is a home built ce lanyard of about 20 feet long. i like the versatility it gives.

Words I like to see. Glad your willing to learn. Your rope length will depend on the size of trees you have, but a 120 will let you get a bunch accomplished. And I agree with the lanyard statement. Go with shorter and easy to use to start.

My lanyard is 8' I think. Whatever it is it's just above the floor when hung on my D. This is neat and trouble free as it doesn't drag on the ground. If I need more length in my lanyard I just pull up the tail end of my climbing line and use a split tail to maneuver around with. Simple and easy equals safe.

Yeah, start with something short, like a 10' lanyard. For learning it's sufficient. Plus it'll keep you in smaller trees. Once you're comfortable then a 15-20' is good. There are retractable ones that keep it out of the way or daisy chain. As for climb line, I started on 120, moved to 150. Now I climb on 200', it's just so much better for the trees I work in. Oh and a good bag, mines a Metrolius, then all you have out is what you're using.

I have a hank of 1/2" bluestreak about 10' -12'. I usually use about 8' - 10' like Adkpk says just up out of your feet and I keep the extra tail in a small daisy chain on my back loop. I use a 4 wrap prussic on my D ring with a aluminium biner. My snap is a steel forestry snap with a captive eye, I like the easy 1 hand use and weight, it's held on with a triple fisherman. Makes it a nice size to hold grab and toss.

I've tried the aluminium biners on spliced eyes but i like the way this handles for me, I use a steel biner on a double fisherman for my regular climbing line as well.

But just a thought, look at the majority of trees in your area if they're realitively tall and skinny maybe try an 8' - 10' but if you down where the trees are tall and fat you may want something in the 25' range. Just my 2 cents.

Wire core lanyards will come about 8-10 feet I think. You can use a short climbing line of any size for a long lanyard, or make one custom to what you will be climbing.

I use a number of different lengths. For most removals I use a 10ft lanyard with a captive eye Biner spliced on one end. I use a 15ft lanyard with straight oval biners and a hitchclimber to use as a lanyard and a short climb line when needed. I use an 11mm line for both of those.
For large prune jobs I use a 50ft 11.7 blue moon lanyard with a spliced eye to use as a longer second climbing line for limbwalks and such. As with what everyone else said, start with a short lanyard, maybe 8 feet.
Good luck and climb safe.
