ISO pic of XT hitch

Here it is, thanks again to Moss:

I didn't think that the XT wasted like that. I remember it as being a VT with dbl wraps on the last cross or two. The one in the pic looks like my version of a VT that I teach. Anyone know differently?

I learned to tie it from photos on the Buzz a couple of years ago, here's the front view might look more familiar, identical to a VT except the tails change direction just below the coils and then wrap.

I currently have the tails shorter than in the photo and use a 4 wrap coil not 5 as in the photo.

I assumed it was called the XT because the cross just below the coils was the X, as opposed to normal braids below the coil as in a VT.

The way the knot is set with this reverse cross just gives it more bite and less fluidness.
Wonder why someone would tie a knot thats less eficient than a VT ???

The VT is a great knot and with the right choice off prussik cord on each different climbing line it will work great every time. If the cord isn't suited for the line it will be a pain in the a*ss.

It's all individual climber preference, I had to flick the VT coils up too often to set, XT less so. There's always a trade-off for every benefit. Take the Distel for example, many climbers swear by it, tends to tighten up too much for me. I rate these three like so:

1. VT - super smooth self-tending, you have to pay attention to it to set it.

2. XT (or whatever it is) - Has 80% of the qualities of the VT but grabs more reliably, very quick/easy to loosen if it tightens up during the climb.

3. Distel - excellent for "pay no attention to it" security, I like it for my adjustable lanyard, binds too much for normal climbing use (for me), a bit of a pain to loosen during the climb compared to XT.

And all the other hitches of course, everyone has good reasons why they like the hitch they use depending on rope choice, hitch cord choice and the way they climb.

I use the distel for the exact same reason AJ.

And I think the VT has to be tuned, for me? 3 wraps, 3 braids with OP works best, but 4 wraps and 3 braids for beeline seems to be good too.

once you find the best combo for the rope and hitch cord?

it is flawless and smoooooooooooooth running.

Good stuff, it's been a couple of years since I climbed VT, I should revisit. One of the problems I found with it is it extends too long when it's loaded, I like my hitch more compact vertically when loaded. Anyway I should give it another go 'round to see if my opinion has changed.

I agree Andrew. I just switched back to the VT about a month ago. I feel it’s more smooth, But I use the xt for my lanyard and for my new climbers. I Like to have a hitch with more grab for the safety factor with new climbers. But again I have found with any hitch and rope combo it needs to be customized to your own body. I think that’s why I was getting so frustrated with the 10mm bee line eye spliced; it would always lock up on me. Now I tie a Vt with 8mm and tie my own termination not with double fisherman’s, so I can fine tune. I always self lock the hitch before I release so I know it will hold.
