Surveys are only good if there people take them. In my 6 years on an ISA committee I saw a lot of results. Some response rates were <10%.
At the last TCIA Expo there were 134 evaluations (with few comments in most) handed in out of...how many 100s attending? p-poor contribution rate imo. It's like beyotching about politicians then failing to vote.
marlin if you have constructive suggestions, please share them.

I have delayed getting involved in my local chapter beyond the various volunteer day and helping with the TCC, due to my full plate of running a business and raising a family. I do plan on running for a board position in the years to come.
As far as constructive criticism?
1. I would like to see the ISA use people from within the industry for the chapter representative positions that seams to be filled with outside marketing consultants. Outside consultants might know marketing but they don't know trees and passion for trees is what promotes our industry. Hiring marketing consultants is a good idea but as advisory roles.
2. We need to revamp the entire trees are good website. The message is lame and the branding is very retro and not in a cool way. Make a new logo that people actually would want to wear and put it on tshirts that people actually want to buy. make it a bit edgy. Use organic and sustainable sources for the consumer products to promote our new role in arboriculture as environmental stewards.
3. Lets promote our work as stewardship. In an era of growing environmental concern this seams like a really good direction to be pushing towards. lets make arboriculture a more holy and worthy pursuit. Lets take a more holistic approach by caring for the entire urban forest through the care of a single specimen at a time.
4. how can we affect policy? I have helped write the standards for local townships to include ANSI and Z187 standards as well as require certified arborists to be on site.
this is just a start, i want to hear other opinions
I agree all the numerous certifications and titles has diluted them all and they mean nothing to most people now. Just a money maker for who ever makes up the certification title and does the classes.
I thought about making some "titles" up ourselves. We could put them on our website or trucks and they would be viewed the same by the public.
"all of our climbers have the Xtreme Rigging Certification, class III board certified and tested"
or
"All of our tree trimmers are super master arborists, XAS certified"..... what ever.....
Used to do some work once in awhile for a rich guy who's cheques had the initials C.L.U. after his name. Asked at the bank what a CLU was, cause I didn't have a clue (pre-internet days)...Chartered Life Underwriter.
I think a "Class II (or III) Rigging Certified" is an excellent marketing opportunity! For max effect, combine with a PHC Diagnostics 901 Qualifification and a Level IV Rope Tech Certification.

OH! Those are very nice and catchy, sophisticated titles indeed! I like them very much!
and as long as you have some paperwork in the office that states the "rules" of certification and shows you passed the "test" then all should be legal.
I paid my union dues (ISA and TCIA), so I kinda feel that entitles me to gripe on any Discussion Board about their antics. I'm just a reluctant low-caste passenger on their cruise line, booked into a windowless cabin in steerage class below the waterline. Just hoping the ship evades icebergs and great white whales.
