ISA Marketing is terrible,

I don't know who is in charge of marketing at the ISA but they are doing a terrible job. The whole trees are good thing needs an update into the new millennium. The trifold series of brochures is also super old school. This organization is supposed to be representing our industry to the world correct? Well the whole look and style is reminiscent of a brochure for a retirement community. Lets make some changes in 2014.

Do something about it. Seriously!

Draft a letter with some ideas.

Attend a meeting or ask for a conference call with the right people (I can try to help with this).

Come up with some good ideas and forward them.

Etc…

I completely agree. With the dues, fees, and CEU's paid in... We as certified arborists should not have to concern ourselves with the public image that the ISA portrays. We are held to a higher standard, so why shouldn't the organization that represents us? It is my understanding that we pay our dues so that we appear "more competent" in the handling of clients trees... So why is the organization that represents us not more interested in it's, and in turn, our - public image. A web site that represents so many people that take their work SO SERIOUSLY should be top notch and updated frequently.

Constructive complaining can make changes, as Tom knows. Hangovers can linger!

Random general beyotching is a waste of time. Was there even a website in 1999? Or are we flashing a Prince song that I heard 3-4 times last night?

Communication with that bureaucracy often takes targeted persistence. they have a new department called Marketing I hear. Send insights to them or members and staff on the Cert committee.

What would be interesting to know is what is that Marketing dept doing for the new year? While it is important to direct feedback to them about their efforts, it is equally, if not more so, important that they are letting us know what is going on.

They are probably too busy counting beans and figuring out how to pay themselves more than improving arboriculture or industry standards. The few ISA certified around my neck of the woods are a joke. ISA is a racket, a name you pay for. Police your members instead of just collecting there money. TCIA does 10x more than I've seen ISA do.

Call them and ask them in a professional manner. Then we all might know.

We are all supposed to be policing our members , Not just them. We are more able to see the day to day people around us than they are. They depend on us to help them.
If they don't count beans, they wont be there in the future to help us.
Its easy to critique from afar. Try to get involved as well. It will keep all our costs down.
Complaining is easy. Doing something takes commitment.

I've been an ISA member for probably 30 years or so and in the last 10 or 15 I've lost all faith in their mission and their intentions. ISA has evolved into a revenue-generating machine that seems to have little concern for their members beyond finding more creative ways to take their money. I continue to pay my dues and keep my Certified Arborist status current, but I don't see much value in it. Ok, rant over. Carry on.

Mike, you are so right about this and I hadn't thought about it. Its actually quite funny, you know. I mean the "love trees" or "touch trees" or "trees are good" slogans that one hears from on high sound like so much regurgitated boilerplate from the '60's nostalgia. I think you are right, but where do we take it from here? The pr campaign has got to embrace trees in the post-industrial, peak oil, hurricane prone new millenia. They are the beacons, the lighthouses that connect past and future environments. Behold! Trees as survival rafts for the new millenium!

"Hang on to your trees!"

We need to infiltrate the organization and change internally. All complainers (I include myself, for I complain to anyone who will listen about isa) need to start running for chapter positions and climbing rungs.

Or we could start pooling ideas and get lotsa members behind them and try to force the organization to accept our thoughts.

All these things sound frustrating and highly time consumptive. And that is where we lose peoples attention. We should start a union, and then the reps would have to take care of all that stuff

They do promote, I will give them that, I ( and it seems others as well) just think they need to step up the game a little and bring the marketing up to date.

Where do you hale from in VT comrade? I live in burlington.

Surveys are collected to find what members want. No infiltration needed. It is right there. Become a state rep. Talk to your chapter reps. No union needed.

Swan, I went to that rec. climd last year. Thanks for organizing. I did not get on buzz to talk to my neighbors. Try front porch forum. Kidding. I am almost at 100. Take that new borns. It is blowing like a S.O.B. cold.
