Introduction and question.

Well after Lurking for quite awhile I figured I would introduce myself and ask a question since I am researching SRT and this seems to be the place to come for that info.

I know a lot of members here from other sites and have been reading some of the commentary of members from here for years.

Anyway, wanted to say hello and ask a question on the frog system which I am looking into purchasing.

I bought a Petzl saddle a couple of weeks ago with the frog system in mind. It has an attachment point designed for the croll ascender. I already have a left foot CMI ascender and a right hand Black Daimond hand ascender. Will a right hand ascender not work in conjunction with the croll ascender? Also, if I do need a left hand ascender is there any reason why I cannot use my left foot ascender? I am trying to figure out if I need to just go ahead and buy a whole new setup to frog it up or just a few items to complete the system. I ordered the book On Rope earlier this week and I plan to do a little reading there before I purchase anything but I am a little eager and curious to see what I need to buy to get started with SRT.

Thanks in advance for any input you have,

Larry

Hi Larry,

Welcome to Treebuzz!

The gear that you have will work fine for frogging. YOu're starting off right, read ON ROPE. Take the time to read it cover to cover. You'll chuckle at the arbo section.

ONe of the key things about setting up an SRT system is to have everything arranged with proper spacing. You can make adjustable lanyards so that you can tweak things to fit.

There is an illustration that shows how the handled ascender and chest ascender should align.

If you haven't already, take the time to go through the TB archives and read up on SRT.

Thanks for the welcome Tom. I have enjoyed reading your commentary for a long time now. Didn't you used to be in Atlanta? I started out there and seem to remember hearing your name around town?

Anyway, glad to know that I am going to be able to use the gear I have already. I plan to study On Rope before I purchase the rest of my components. I really kind of wish that I had bought a right foot ascender but as I remember, I got mine on clearance for a good price 2 or 3 years ago. It's really no big deal but I do have bigger muscles in my right leg.

One more question, the Black Diamond ascender I have only has 1 hole in the handle to attach a cord to. I hope that's not a deal breaker for the frog system. It is a large hole and I could probably tie two cords to it in the same hole but I generally try to avoid situations that might cause unnecessary friction on my lines and I don't know how safe that would be.

Thanks again for the advise.

A few different ways to skin that cat, you can place your life support tether attachment in the bottom hole and girth your footloop attachment through the handle opening. Or you can put a biner on the top hole and put your life support tether on that and attach your footloop on the bottom hole.

Welcome treemd.

I can't recommend high enough an adjustable system and tuning it to a moderate extension. I find it more efficient and rhythmic to take shorter strides (6-8" per advance) in my natural working range than huge lunges and hassling with the inevitable hangups.

At the bottom of my ascender I use a Gecko 'biner, which is extremely small. The radius of the biner is much larger than the aluminum stamping of the ascender.

Also more than a good idea to put a biner on the top of the ascender, too, than to figure out how the rope came out of the ascender when it does. I use this top biner as the collection point for all the other loops of the system when I stow it on my harness.

Moss' suggestion of using the top biner for life support is great. I use NE Ropes Tech cord because its stiff enough to arc out of the way when slacked

Cool link. I actually found that one while researching the Pantin yesterday. Lol, the guy said he got death threats by arbos after rating the Pantine a lemon. I got a chuckle out of that. I have been reading a lot about the unicender in the archives here. Sounds like a nice piece of kit. Also saw lots of strong suggestions to use a biner in the top of the ascender. Lots of info to absorb here.

I worked as a climber in Atlanta from 91 to 2001 and worked for a few of the larger services in town. I bet we have a lot of mutual friends.

Tree limb Jim, sounds like you've got it down to a science. Would you happen to have a pic of your system?
