Introducing the MagThrowBag

YEAH.

Dude Brian and I spent over a month working on using magnets as throwballs to aid in retrieval. We gave up on it and never used them in Treeverse, but always felt there was a lot of potential there.

Throwing both ends together with a carabiner girthed to one side is bloody brilliant. Certainly never occurred to me. Well done.

That was pretty cool. Do you think that you could replace one of the throw lines with the tail end of your rope? I can see myself making a tangled mess.

Comment:Throw line management is important especially with two lines going out.

If you do not plan on doing long distance traverses this is a good technique.

Max distance using 30' of throw line is 15' of traverse using the double line technique at 2:56 in the video I posted. It is relatively easy to keep 30' of line from a tangle.

You will be holding the middle of the lines when you toss, one end on the bag, the other on the mag, toss and pop. Now remember when you bring one end in, the other end goes out. No tangle as you are working a continues loop.

Single line toss as shown at 3:47. It is possible to substitute one line with your climb line but you have to send your climb line out twice.

Make a monkey fist (with either throw bag or steel biner) with enough line to return from your new support point. Squeeze the key chain biner to the climb line or secure with key chain biner or small prusik. Attach magnet at key chain biner and toss the fist. The fist will unravel... capture biner as in 4:47 and bring the climb line back. Send the climb line.........back out once the key chain biner has been removed replacing the throw line.

Personally I think this can be done this way but it is more difficult and it is easier for me just to use a small amount of throw line and use it in a continues loop made when the magnet and throw-bag connect at the new support point. Because it is a continues loop, you have no tangle.

This all assumes there is too much foliage below just to swing the magnet to the hanging biner or bag and bring them back.
as shown in this video at about 1:20

Was at a friends house the other night and they had a little novelty magnetic bearings. You could make a necklace or bracelet and change shape. Thought that maybe you could pack a throwbag with those beads.

They are called Bucky Balls, now against the Consumer protection agency but if you don't call them Bucky balls you can find them.
BUT.......I have been down that road and have lots of Bucky Balls to play with, NO not big balls, Bucky Balls!
Anyway, I have been playing with many combinations for the past year and that one did not work out. (Some reasons.. expense, they form a hard clump in the bag are a few)

Question: I have the magthrowbag.com site up and have them available. Sold in set of two but perhaps individually would be good. I just found having two sizes worked for me.
Second: I don't expect to make much money from this but want to cover my cost. What would you expect for a price? I am very happy to freely share the information on how to make your own as well.

Mine is custom made and the hole does not go all the way through giving it a stronger connection to the throw bag. I use a 1x1 with the heavier throw bag and a 1x1/2 with the smaller bag.
Some tips if you are making one:
Make sure you use a stainless steel screw eye otherwise the magnet will capture the screw eye and not the other magnet.
Also, wrap them with shrink tube to protect them.
Put the magnet in the freezer before you apply the shrink tube or the heat applied will de-magnitize the magnet.
The hole is probably smooth so use a Dremel or similar to make the eye cement in the hole better and prevent it from coming out when lifting things like your chain saw. Again, make sure the magnet comes out of the freezer before you do this and create heat. There are lots of warning about grinding on magnets so do this at your own risk.

Here is a 1x1 listed for sale similar to what I have.

yoyo, love the idea.

In regards to the site: I think that your price is totally reasonable. I'd put the price next to or above the Buy Now so people don't have to add it to the cart to see how much it is.

I personally think selling them separately would be better. I'm only interested in having one, probably the larger one.

If you're considering trying to make a few bucks you could always stock some steel shot throwbags. I personally don't have one and I'd have to order one somewhere else. It may be more trouble than it's worth though.. as great an idea as this is I doubt you'll see a huge financial gain for your innovation. It could be worth talking to Luke about stocking them for you.

Thanks for the tips on the DIY too!

Thanks for the tips, I agree totally and I think Luke is the man for the job.
I'm truly just enjoying all of this and don't really have any aspirations for financial gain, I think it would be a financial disappointment, as opposed the sense of contribution we all enjoy here when we can make a contribution.

Edit: P.S. For starters I made a little change to the website so that it is more clear. Thanks again.

Oh wow! Just got my magnets. Super cool. Now I need to figure put a steel throw bag. This is why I love my job. This is so much fun. Thanks Richard!

I ordered my set. Looking forward to it. I can't find the website anymore. What is it?

Yours was shipped yesterday.

MagThrowBag

I hope you enjoy watching that little bag bounce it's way back to you as much as I enjoy watching it.

Oh, and I have about 60' of 1.75mm zing-it in my chalk lines so on a good day I can get a 60' traverse, it has to be a pretty clear shot though, use the small cube and like I said, a GOOD day.
But the 15' and 20' foot stuff, as you see in that last video, I can do those all day long and pretty darn quick.
Now, if I could climb like you guys, I'd be somebody :)

Thanks,
You know that is pretty funny because as I watch the whole movie I wanted to go back in time and give you one! Especially the part where the bag came back across that field.

I never have had service like that even from tree stuff.

Well, that has to be the magic of the magnet, or just a fluke, because no one can compete with Luke.
Just one additional thought, I appreciate the kind compliments but I am surrounded by great talent here at treebuzz , this was a simple little idea and YOU GUYS are the inspiration.

I looked at the magnet on ebay, it says it has 95lbs of pull force - how are you getting the bag to separate with that kind of pulling weight?

With an underhand toss I attach to the ring of the throw bag, overhand or in a slingshot I attach to the top side of the bag. Once over the limb a quick jerk, will pull it off the ring or the side of the bag.
