How did that shorten the fall any?

I think cutting it high like that causes the tip to hit at a steeper angle causing more damage. Cut low shallow notch, back cut into the hinge slowly, trees comes down slower at less angle.

Not that I saw. Even failed at a proper barber chair with that stem behind it
