I'm from Canada, eh

Hey guys and gals,

Thought I'd say hello. My names Will and I'm new to the world of tree climbing (on rope). I used to free climb trees when I was younger but since grew out of it. The beginning of winter I saw a few videos on YouTube of people climbing so I looked into it more and I was hooked. It looked like so much more fun using ropes and knots as well as gadgets of all types. Tree climbing was fun in general but adding rope, you can go further and do more.

Thanks to Richard and Logan (and countless others).. I've learned a lot about tree climbing and tree camping. I've recently received my gear and made my first climb! I jumped in head first with SRT and a rope walker system. I enjoy the simplicity of it even with all the gadgets. I'm just in the stage of getting everything dialed in but I have to say the two climbs I've done so far have gone quite well besides not being able to feel my fingers and toes. -30C.. not fun.

If there is anyone wanting to do some climbing this summer by all means.. I plan on doing some backpacking and camping and of course day trips. I'm located just an hour north of Toronto.

Here's a few pics of my excursion..

Good to hear from you will. Glad you found some good resources. Wish I was closer, I'd go climb in the cold with you.

Are you using a rope walker system that ascends only, then switching to a descent system? Or are you climbing on an ascent/descent system? I ask because the changing of systems in the tree can be tricky especially at the beginning stage.

Good luck with the climbing. The one thing I would recommend is a good helmet.

Thanks, macswan.

I'm using a rope wrench, CT foot ascender, and SAKA. I agree.. I wanted something where I could descend fairly quickly if the need arises.

I've got my eyes on the Black Diamond half dome helmet.. Might not be the best out there but it appears to have good reviews and is priced well.

Great to see someone smiling and having a good time on their first climb!
You said you're in Canada... that's the big slab of ice up there north of Wisconsin, somewhere, right?

Actually, gets damn cold here, too, in Nebraska. It just doesn't stay that way for quite so long.

Always be tied in. When you're switching systems be sure you've got a lanyard or other means of securing yourself.

Lots of good climbing around T.O.

Have fun and be safe.

Lol, that's right! Feels like we're in igloos year round.
