I'm A Drunk

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Well today marks 20 years since my last drink. I still think about having one every once in a while. I know I can't.

I don't have any more money than I did when I was drinkin', BUT I have a lot of cool toys that are bought and paid for. OH! And NO hangovers either!!!

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Can't you just have one or two? I guess it doesn't work that way for you guys.
I can never drink more than a few barley pops, and it's all I drink when I do.
Congrats on your continued sobriety!

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Not a drop that whole time. 1 or 2 would likely turn into quite a few!

IMO A drunk can NOT just have a social drink, they have purpose to their drinking.....to get drunk! I have had a bit of time to try and figure out why I drank the way I did, perhaps I will figure it out one day. I doubt is is any ONE thing, probably a bit of genetics, low self-esteem..............possibly a self-destructive tendancy.

I know of a few people who were warned by their Doctor to quit or die, several have been planted six feet deep.

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Congrats treedimensional! Twenty years, is fantastic.

It'll be 3 years for me in a couple of weeks. Somedays it is hard but nowhere near as bad as the begining.

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Yup, the first while is a bugger. The cool thing is that at about the 3 yr mark, your thinking changes, and you kinda return to what most people would consider NORMAL!!!

Congrats Brent, and thanks for sharing that personal bit for inspiration to others that have that battle.

I was reading a book about Alcoholism, as I know people battling. The book indicated that basically most people's brain chemistry is sedated by alcohol after a few drinks. I get sleepy fast, sometimes thinking after two or three that I'd have be better not having had that second or third.

Alcoholics don't get the sedation effect that acts as a negative feedback cycle (drinking more make one less inclined to drink more).

Alcohol just plain works with the biochemistry differently in certain people.

I believe that there is a testable brain wave that shows differences between those prone to alcoholism and those not biologically prone to alcoholism.

Book title: Under the Influence. A guide to the myths and realities of alcoholism. By: James Milam PHD and Datherine Ketcham. Was at the time of printing $7.99USD.
ISBN 978-0-553-27478-5

It is good for everyone to understand what is happening if they are affected by and trying to help someone with alcoholism.

I think that it is a real accomplishment to do without something that one's body/ brain craves strongly. If I had good impetus, I could easily never have another drink again. My body/ brain is just wired differently. I would have a much harder time giving up sweets than alcohol, just because of the way I'm wired.

Re: I\'m A Drunk

I used to smoke marijuana from the time I was 13 or 14 all the way up to April 7th, 2007 and I smoked it just about everyday or every chance I had. So I been sober from that for 3 years now and the reason I stopped using is that I was trying to get hired with the state highway patrol to become a trooper but that didn't work out since there I failed 3 out of 4 parts of the written exam and one part of the medical exam (eye sight's not good for them even with glasses) although I'm supposed to wear glasses just for reading which I still don't. Also ever since I been clean I still think about doing it but then I tell myself if I start back up, I will be mad at myself. I do save money now from not buying/using the green stuff but I do drink myself every now and then about a 6 pack of Coors light a month and to me that not bad at all compared to how much I drank when I first turned 21. But congrats on staying clean for 2 years now and hope for many more of sober years to come.

Had a neighbor who was retired from the service. He and his wife drank from the time they got up till the time they went to bed. I never saw either sober. Matter of fact I thought the true color of his eyes was red. One day he stopped up to the house looking for work. He says, "give me that chainsaw I'll make her sing." We told him fine, come with a clear head. Eventually he did. After being with us awhile he went to rehab for a couple weeks. When he came back he told me he has given up drinking. So I asked of course how. He said while in rehab he was walking down the hall and this guy behind him was talking to someone, so he turned around to see who the guy was talking to and there was no one else there. He decided he didn't want to end up like that. My neighbor had also been married about 4 times too. After he quit drinking he got divorced and remarried and is still married to the same woman. I said how is this one working out when the others didn't. He said and I'm quoting,"you take away the alcohol, you take away the a--h---." After a lifetime of drinking he too had those cravings, at first he handled it by drinking non-alcohol beer for the taste he said. Not something I'm advocating, seems like playing with fire to me but just relating his story. And this was about 20 yrs ago also. He's still married, got a job, still sober and still a friend. Good luck.

Great story.

Re: I\'m A Drunk

Congrats to all you for staying sober.

I try to tell people who don't drink (for I am one who does not), staying sober is a hard road to travel. I use this to explain; For the non drinker pick your favorite pop or candy or food or any habit, and try to never have it again for the rest of your life. Not an easy task, I have seen first hand the effects of alcoholism and drugs on a family and watched it spread to the next generation in line, very devastating.

Good luck with your recovery all.
