Illinois TCC 2009

Norm I know you said no aluminum rings no ecceptions with out a rating and manufacturer, but not even the ring that came with the Tree motion?

[/ QUOTE ]

If it doesn't have a rating or manufacturer on it, it cannot be used, period.

The Illinois Arborist Association can't take that risk.

It's a shame that climbers have to have an incident before something is done about it. I've been suspect of unmarked equipment (climbing & rigging) for years. Haven't used it and NEVER will.

If you were responsible for the safety of 30 competitors , what would you do?

Norm the Treemotion has aluminum ring's on the side for flip line attachment without a rating or manufacturer name. should we just bring different harness?

reread the recall...it is the polised Al rings only...the ones that are colored or are not polished are not recalled..if they dont allow the treemotion I think there will be a lot of top notch climbers upset with not being able to use that saddle

In response to the various enquiries about the aluminium rings on the treeMOTION, I hope the following will provide the necessary answers.

The green anodised aluminium ring on treeMOTION is made by DMM in North Wales and is of the same specification as the rings here:

http://www.dmmindustrial.com/productsDetails.asp?id=6&id2=41&id3=343

and in the range of Teufelberger rope tools here:

http://www.teufelberger.com/en/products/treecare/tools.html

You can see that each product carries a CE mark which normally refers to both a dynamic and static rating. As a minimum, the green rings have passed independent assessment by two Notified Bodies (SGS in the UK and TUV in Austria) covering a number of EN Standards either as a stand alone item or as part of an assembly - EN813, EN566, EN795B, EN354 etc. A static strength of 30kN is quoted.

Until the most recent batches of treeMOTION, the bridge rings have been unmarked. The reason for this is that the ring is part of a certified assembly and therefore carries the same certification as the harness. If we were to include a ring marked to its‘ full spec (EN795B and 30kN), it might give the impression that these are the ratings for the harness, which would be wrong! The most recent treeMOTION rings are now marked with DMM, Teufelberger, treeMOTION and CE0120 (the number of the Notified Bodied).

Norm has stated that unmarked rings will not be accepted at the Illinois TCC. In an attempt to ensure that treeMOTION climbers will be able to use their harnesses, DMM will ship some of the latest spec rings to Norm for the TCC. Can I ask that that the rings are returned to Norm after they have been used at the TCC, so that (if necessary) they can be sent on to the next TCC.

So, just to summarise! The green rings on treeMOTION are made by DMM at their own facilities in North Wales. A brief spec is on the DMM web site. All DMM rings of this spec are CE marked to EN795B and 30kN. If Teufelberger incorporate a DMM green ring into a product, it passes through a sceond phase of independent assessment. treeMOTION rings are additionally CE marked under the harness certification. Norm will have a goodie bag at the Illinois comp.

Lookin forward to seeing you and Meagan, Wes. I appreciate the help. I have you as a scoring judge for WC and MC. April requested that Meagan help her out running score sheets to the scoring team from the 5 prelim events. Meagan will get a break while you score the MC.
I'll be in touch.
