Yesterday, just after loading and hauling a dump full of ash by myself and kicking back for a nap I hear knocking. It was the owners of both my favorite restaurant AND favorite bar. There's this cat in a tree, been there four days, two thunderstorms, etc. It was a half mile away. Shannon, wife of the guy who owns the bar is there shooting a nice digital with what looked like 70-200mm 2.8 lens... serious glass. She did this picture essay on Facebook.
It was an easy fetch, took about 20 minutes, cat was mellow but... I wasn't wearing a helmet, only a my favorite 'Trees are Good' hat. I do that sometimes on cats. Bad behavior, I confess, I don't do it often and as you can see from the pictures, I paid the price.
This is the cat, fat orange tabby, turned out he was over a mile from home. Just as I was about to go up for him I get a call from Raleigh about a cat in a tree, been there three days, two thunderstorms, yadayada...
OK this shot is going in the footlocking thread as what NOT to do. I thought I was paying close attention to my form since I was showing off and all. I've known these guys for going on ten years but they've never seen me work.
The cat went way out the worst possible limb on this big old tulip so I had to throw a TIP that was more over the cat. The wood was a big 9" or 10" fork with a nice swing and drop out to the limb... and she missed the swing dammit!
And tragically, I dropped my hat.
I gave it a few minutes to get used to me, scratched his well furred head...
And snatched him by the scruff and whipped the pillowcase over his .
I tied off the bag a little tight, you can kinda see his nose near the top.
This photographer knows her manual exposure, she nailed it, and that's a bitch with trees and sky.
It shocks the hell out of me when I see how bald the back of my head is. If only I'd worn my helmet... like I KNEW I should, I could have been spared this view of myself. This is the consequence of male pattern baldness combined with lack of proper PPE. I've learned my lesson.
This is the owner, says the cat's been missing since Mother's day.
Nice batch of photos, eh? I hardly ever get photos.
I have no pictures of cat #2 but it was a nine year old black cat not more than 30' up a scrawny pine right next to a slightly less scrawny pine. It was even easier and I had my lovely accomplice Robin along on her first cat bagging.
Two cats in one day, a first for me, $250 unexpected bucks, some great hometown PR and a nice date in Raleigh... pretty good day.
