I hate ladders

I agree with masterblaster,my brother in law will not be able to get all of the hardware out of his leg until this fall. He only fell from four feet but landed on the edge of the turf and pavement. Give me a rope and saddle keep the ladder!

I talked to my dad today about the incident and he said that he was about 12 feet up on a step ladder cuttiing branches. He had a guy that just started working on monday that was supposed to be holding the ladder but it was on soft ground and when the ladder shifted he fell.

Goes to show ya even with someone holding the ladder you can still bust your a** I hate them also.I won't prune ornamentals because of having to use ladders. But then for Palms and getting on roofs i chance it. Hope your Dad gets will soon.

Ladders are the best, they make pruning really simple.............climb to the top of the ladder and cut! /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My father is also an arbo, but works in NYC so it's a bit far for us to run a crew together.

I'm wary of ladders but like anything it comes down to how you manage things.

On the occasions when I use ladder I frequently:
-have someone "foot" the ladder (feet aginst bottom to stop it sliding) until I'm happy.

--use a pole srap around the ladder with or without the ladder secure up top so I can get enthusiastic when I throw / cut whatever.

-use layers of reinforced rubber under one leg to level it up.
-tie a ladder at a midpoint to a point in a tree.

--use ladders to get quickly over congested parts of a tree--eg dense ivy

-use a ladder as a quick way up to being tied in in the tree.
