I don't see how you climbers do it.....

Good point Sean, once you've done it a while and start to develop habits, preferably good ones, you can relax more. Standing on spikes with a saw for the first time is anything but relaxing, it's almost overwhelming if you're up high on a spar.
Do that 10 or 15 times and it eases off quite a bit. Spikes are fairly comfortable once you get used to'em. They make climbing easy.

You reacted the way most folks do after their first production climb. It gets better. In fact, if you keep doing it, you'll be pissed if someone else gets to climb instead of you.

I know I will have to climb again someday but I would rather work out of a bucket.

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

I'm sorry but climbing is the easiest part of tree work if you ask me. Ground work is WAAAYYYYY to much effort. It's easy getting a tree from verticle to horizontal but damn is it hard to get that now horizontal tree into the chipper.

Unless of course you own a mini skid steer, and in that case I hate you.

Just keep at it. You get used to it.

Get you a good tree close to home that is going to be removed. Get it scheduled for a week later, and see if you can use the tree as practice in the mean time. Stop in every day or two. Go up it and tie in. Come down and go back up. Then try some limb walks, and things, each time doing something new in it. You will become familiar and comfortable in the tree. Then when it comes time to do the job, leave the bucket alone and climb it. You will know the tree, and already have a plan of action, and will be anctious by this time.

If you would be able to do this, I think it would help allot and be very rewarding!

....stick with it , it does take time .... it took me a long time to get comfortable spike and safety ... a shorter curve for top rope ... the bucket will not reach all the work ... climbing is a great skill to have ....

Sounds like you might find it helpful to attend a tree climbing seminar or competition. You can learn a lot just by watching.

Also, get yourself a couple of books. Tree Climbers Companion by Jeff Jepson and Fundamentals of Tree Work by Gerry Baranek.

I have always found it exhausting to spend the day in a tree and never truly enjoyed it, until recently, and I've been doing it 15 years!

Mental attitude has a lot to do with it and that comes from familiarity and confidence in your self, your system and your equipment. That requires a conscious effort to correct. Proper mental attitude is where it is at.

If you get a chance, see if you cant take some time to visit some of the folks here on the Buzz and do some climbing with them. You never know what you'll discover!

Re: I don\'t see how you climbers do it.....

Use the rain days to read up like Wood said and practice knots, and hitches. We used to throw a couple ropes up in the rafters and practice footlocking with the new employees. I knew a bucket junkie well one day his bucket didn't want to work. 5 hours later and a tree on the ground I just shook my head and said " told ya need to climb once in a while". He looses many jobs because people don't want the trucks on their yards. Being multi functional is a good asset to your boss, bucket, climb, ground op,and open minded.

So true, here in the PNW, most buckets will get to the bottom 1/3 or 1/2 of a lot of the tree, and then you have to be sure not to cream your bucket with limbs/ trunkwood.

When people as if I have a ladder, I like to tell them that I have a 100' ladder for the big trees, then tell them the truth. There's usually a chuckle and some insight.

Donald, it takes time, but gets easier with experience. Mentors will go a long way. Hope you find someone that'll take you out on a climb. Maybe you should post with how far you'll travel.
