how young is to young to climb?

My boy is turning two in about a week. In my excitement to get him started I ordered him the ouistiti yesterday. I realize he may be a bit young to haul up in a tree now, so I was wondering how young some of you got your kiddos started? I also cant find a helmet that will fit his head so that will be a limiting factor. The kid loves to swing and climb so I thought maybe I could start with a rope swing on the saddle. Do I need to let go of my ego and be patient or is now the time to get him started?

There are Bike helmets that would fit and that would be a start - BUT, you have had the child on a swing?

That to me is the first step - Do they like swings - sitting on rope in a harness is just about the same feeling?

Since they are not really able to PULL themselves up yet you are doing all the work - Tether them to you and get a few feet up and see what they do.

SMILE is my guess.

HAVE FUN POST PICTURES

I started mine at the old age of 8, BUT others on here have done it earlier

I think it depends on the kid.
My daughter was harnessed up in that same saddle at 3.
At 5 her and her friends were jumping off a 12 foot orchard ladder while on a figure 8 belay
At 10 she was climbing 50 feet to get in our treeboat to use the phone...see attached pic

I started climbing for money at age 14.

I now have 3 grown children that I purposefully and successfully convinced not to have anything to do with this biz.

And since young adults tend to do the opposite of what their parents advise them to, I figure I'll snag at least one of the three eventually.

This is such a brutal and dangerous biz that my conscience demands that any child of mine chooses it as a profession of his or her own accord.

Hey kids! Want to grow up and be an orthopedic wreck like your daddy?

I think what excites me the most is that the boy is fascinated with all of my gear and ropes. His favorite books are my trade mags and catalogs. He loves his sit on swings and gets pissed when I won't swing him as high as he wants to go. I promised my wife I wouldnt do anything stupid, so I think I will be patient and not push it. I love the pics Jesse, Keep em coming. I took My son to watch the first day of the TXTCC and all he said for a week was "rope, climb tree" He is an awesome little dude.

SO what harm will it be to setup a swing on your ropes and put him in harness - NOT like your allowing him to jump out of a tree onto a trampoline
OPPs

OH WELL - i allow mine to throw water balloons out and to swing to her hearts content.

IF they want to get into the business, that like all say is up to them. At the least they will understand that climbing is FUN when done safely.

ENJOY the giggles and grins

dont do it Jman
they get older and then begin systematical destroying your athority bit by bit untill you end up in a corner, fetal posstion ,crying into your pillow...right? anyone? just me?.....chirp chirp

Stop its Jesse you make me want to have kids just so I can help them like you do.

[/ QUOTE ]That's actually a damn good reason to have'em... but you WILL end up in the fetal position just like Jesse said.

Some really cool stuff here....I am only 20 but have often thought of doing the same stuff as you do jesse with the setups...endless fun you can do...someday when I have a couple kids of my own...I look forward to it but am also patient but jesse there are really cool pics...keep them coming..

I have to admit that I have been thinking about pulling Climber up to a platform in my white oak with him in his car seat. He would be strapped in tight, right?

I hope I can wait till he is two years old before getting him up in a tree. He has these incredibly strong legs, made for kicking and squirming. I think if I put a pantin on his foot he could cruise up a rope right now.
