How small of top will you climb into?

Timbr, ya I've been reading on the forum for a bit. Im another self taught climber so trying to learn any way I can. Done a lot of rec climbing in the last year and did my first removal last month and enjoyed every second of it. Got paid to have fun for a morning. Im sure it sounds dumb but toping out my first tree was quite the rush.

It does not sound dumb at all to me, seeing as you've just done something that I have yet to do. All of my climbing so far has been for the purpose of deadwooding trees that are staying, with the exception of cutting way back on a couple of large oak leaders that were about to overhang a house.

So you're kicking ass and taking names at an early stage. Congratulations! Hopefully word of mouth will keep more work coming your way.

Did the owner of the tree take care of the mess at the end? Most guys seem to love jobs like that, as the cleanup seems to take as long as dropping the tree in the first place. Plus you need to have all of the expensive gear, like chippers, chip trucks, grapple trucks etc., and a place to get rid of it all.

Congratulations, once again. This was a huge step!

Ya all I had to do was get it on the ground. Homeowner is a neighbor of mine and he was happy with it so hoping for some more jobs but we will see.

He's talking about how the fibers of the wood separate when they break. Both species have a tendency just to pop or suddenly release.

Personally I'll go with, bends a lot then breaks, very brittle, pops out, it's just damn weak....
but I learned something, thanks. Can't wait to use it next time I'm standing amongst a group of engineers.

Back to the OP's question about how small of a pine top will you climb into: Remember your house is probably framed with SPF 2X4s (Spruce, Pine, Fir). Think about how strong a 2X4 is when loaded longitudinally. If you set a 2X4 vertically in a solid anchor, I'd gladly go up it. Of course, if you set it horizontally, sticking out from a wall, I sure wouldn't sit my fat azz on it very far out from the wall.

Just food for thought...

With smaller crotches or lately ash being extra brittle but still needing height I'll cow hitch a sling or my fs as far down below the crotch as possible and flip the rings or biner up through the smaller crotch so I'm actually girthed to something larger and I've even put back up slings and biners 2 or 3 at 3' increments going down from the top as back ups.
