How old is too old to climb??

The other day a nosey person was peaking over my shoulder as I was checking out TreeBuzz. The usual questions came: "What are you doin'?" "What's that site for?" "Why you lookin' at that?" After silence and a bewildered stare, I got "Are you nuts? You're too old for that kind of s**t!"

Now I've been called nuts before so that didn't bother me but I guess the "too old" comment kinda ticked me.

I don't consider myself to be "old". I stay active and I'm in decent physical shape so I certainly don't feel old.

So....How old is too old to climb trees??

Unless a person adopts the Way of the Geezer Warrior. Then there's no end to the days of climbing. It may be just climbing out of bed...into the truck...but, it's climbing!

I will say, that i have done MORE firsts in my life since I turned 50.

jz - heading for the hair dye - NOT

Well I turned 50 in August, and I was thinking it might be time to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up. Na, why spoil a good thing!!!

We had a smarta$$ 23 year old certified utility kid want to work with us. We finally tried him out, and by noon my wife was carrying him around. Going home at the end of the day he remarked "I can't believe I couldn't keep up to a couple 50 year olds". At least he was smart enough to NOT say "keep up to a 50 year old woman". The next day he didn't show up, I phoned and the response was that he was too sore.

Your body and mind will let you know when its time to hang it up. The funny thing is that I entered the tree industry at the age of 40 after a serious accident. The running joke is that "if I had of known I was going to live so long, I would have taken better care of myself".

I believe I am in as good a shape as I was when I was 30. Listen to your body, it will tell you when its had enough.

I tell my kids , the day they take away my gear is when I give up tree work... Age 45 and going strong...

Later from SO-CAL

I can still remember being 48.

If your body tells thats enough, what do you do when your mind says Shut Up! Im still doing this?

I have to think proper care and prevention can go along way, but what if you mind is lying to your body?

What if your just stubborn and instead of admiting to yourself its over, you adopt the attitude that you controll your destiny and you will over come age, injury, or set back to continue?

Is that being smart or really stupid? Are you hurting yourself more, or climbing to concur the mountain?

Hello all. I appreciate your replies and I'm glad to see that there are those my age and older that are climbing (I'm 41 by the way).

I guess a better question would have been:
"Hold old is too old to start learning tree climbing?"

treedimensional said he started when he was 40, so I'm getting the idea it might not really matter too much as long as I'm healthy.
Did anyone else start out when they were "older"?

Lastly I have to say, I won't do the dye!!!

I started turning gray around 25 and have been completely gray for more years than I can remember.

And, despite seeing all those commercials suggesting that I will get promoted at work and hot girls 1/2 my age will throw themselves at me, I refuse to dye my hair!
