and they are all on the side of the prevailing west wind.

g Aaaaahhh! The essential clue. heavy storm bent stems over, small cracks formed at the worst bending points, then cracks sealed in the years since.

that's my theory and i'm sticking to it-- until a better one comes along!
 
My First thought was sapsucker, I think I will step away from that theory since EZ and Blinky suggested it. My new theory is it was spring poled back in the day and has since healed. I would consider recent weather events that it has survived and the protection from the surrounding canopy as well as potential targets and areas of recreation. I am sure that bing will make the correct decision. Allso consider an recent construction encroachment and a PHC program for for radification of any such impingements.
