On Facebook I saw a still shot photo, from the opposite perspective (and much further away). The guy was indeed tied in to the building. The tree was leaning and had an "S" curve in it.
In the video we can see the rigging line was most likely attached to the base of the tree (with some sort of lowering device). With all of the above observations mentioned... I think the lean and the shape of the tree added to the recoil effect. If the spar were vertical, I don't think he would have had such a violent time.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had broken ribs, internal bleeding and a ruptured organ (or two).
