Home made rope guide

I saw this construction in Copenhagen and made it myself out of 13mm Stable Braid and 8mm Tech 12. The Stable Braid is approx 2mtrs long with a wide eye spliced in one end. The Tech 12 is spliced into a prussik loop with a pulley attatched to it. As you see on the picture I have basically replaced the lockjack in the rope guide with a prussik friction hitch. I haven´t tried it yet but it seems promising. Any comments of what might go wrong?

Svein. Sorry I didn't catch up with you in Copenhagen, I heared you were looking out for me. I was the one with the beer in hand!

The rope guide looks good, but, it may not retrieve to well. The big loop needs something to keep it open. I saw one with wire inserted inside the rope. Also you could use garden hose.
Also you could put tape around the prussik and the pulley to keep the pulley in a straight line to the prussik. If it hangs at an angle this will also make it harder to retrieve.

Rigging and Roping pg.2, "Make your own friction saver" pg 3. Check out Tod K.'s attatchment.
I tried a bunch of different combos, but never the hose. So I had retrieval problems too. Finally i copied the "prusic-adjust Friction Saver". It helps me out most on removals.
I still don't have a tiny clevis though. I just called the store and they run $30+. So I left a long tail, so I don't have to climb all the way back up to get it.

wouldn't the edges of the pulley bite into the rope

That did happen to me once, and i worried about that too. My rope was running up on the edge, and not straight and centered. But then i had a piece of stable-braid girth hitched to the pulley, and not spliced eyes.

Yeah, I was one of those too, good beer though. Meet you another time. I´ve tried my rope guide now and yes it didn´t retrieve well - not at all actually. So I guess I will try one of your tips - or maybe buy the original.
The edges in the pulley are rounded so they won´t cut the cord unless it gets a very severe shock load (tons) and in that case it might be better that it brakes....

Very nice. Where did you get the pulley to put on the clevis?

Thanks,
Jim

Haha- I ummm, mutilated a petzl fixe for it.

I have the same problem, my rope keeps riding out of the pulley, and onto the edge anytime I put slack in the rope.

I dont have that problem with the twisted clevis and fixe pulley thingy mobobby /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use this one.
Don't you all have a problem with ripping the bark from the tree?
Had a frictionsaver that ripped the bark from the tree because the line that I used bit in the tree.

This one is more flexible and sets to the tree instead of the tree to the frictionsaver.
Now I can say again that it also saves the cambium.

Better.

This way you pull the ring OVER the pulley, instead of the pulley around and thru the ring. What you don't see in the pic is the piece of shrinkwrap just over the pulley. This way the "rope" over the pulley is stiffened so the pulley slicks out better.

Because the prussic is on the "other side", there is more force on it and sometimes it slips a little if it's not dressed well.

Treespotter, nice setup. I hate to bother you, but could you post a picture of it laid out on a table or floor or hanging from a hook?

Is it just an eye-and-eye on each end of the line: one with the pulley and one with the the ring?

Where did you buy the ring?

Thanks,
Jim

I hate to be bothered :-)

It's an eye-and-eye on each end.

In holland the climbinggear company's also sell the aluminium rings from the frictionsavers separately.

The "prussic" is a dyneemaa sling. If you dress it you have to do it in a croocked way so it bites better.

The pulley is from ART, it's the only one (I found) that fits thru the rings.

Local Sherril dealer for Toronto can't/won't get those ART mini blocks (pulleys have cheek plates with anchor holes) for whatever reason. Anyone know of another source?
