home made gear

Reg has a great YouTube video outlining the use of the "trolly" and its functionality.

Because I was estimating the dimensions from pictures we used the "cart" for a day before I painted it up in case I wanted to change anything. You can see the stakes are out on just the one side for stacking the wood. With brush you pull up to the chipper with the butts ahead, pull the stakes on one side and feed away at an easy height. You can also easily dump and just go back for another load. I just do weekend gigs with my son who's a full timer. He was skeptical as I welded away but became a believer after a few turns...

Are those homemade portys powdercoated? I had a couple of my lowering devices powdercoated and they didn't hold up well to the rope running. They streaked my lines.. on my new ones I'm making I'm leaving the barrell raw with a light coat of oil to prevent rust or corrosion... The bollard straps to the tree with a 4" ratchet strap...here is a little demo of it.

Nice design

We all like to save some money and have fun by building our own gear. And for situations where life and property are never at risk, I'm cool with that. But for any piece where a single failure is unacceptable, I'll spend the extra bread. Better to be safe than sorry. The fall never hurts, but the sudden stop at the end sucks.

@NETREE, I worked at a custom fabrication shop for 8yrs, a lot. Of it being critical pieces that held cars on semi trailers driving down the highways. To be honest, I trust my welds more than I trust some Chinese mass produced welds by some factory workers like the portys have....I stihl work at a fab shop where we build desert race cars with 700+hp. Those welds also have to be very strong. My devices are very strong and made to last forever. The weak points would be rigging point and rope,

CC, I couldn't get your video link to work. :(

It sounds like you're plenty skilled in metal work, welding, heat treating, and material selection. I certainly don't mean to imply that there aren't people out there who are competent enough to build some great homebrew gear.

I'm sure you understood where I was coming from.

Yeah, I know what you are talking about. I have seen some pretty sketchy welds by some people. I know what your talking about, some Joe shmo who welded a few times and has an old welder laying around thinking they are gonna save some cash and end up building a sketchy piece of equipment and it failing causing great damage or injury. I promise I won't ever do that.. . Cheers

No biggie Erik, I have been criticized a bunch by other guys, mostly from A.S. saying they wouldn't trust my work and that I'm not qualified to make these types of devices. Usually they change their mind when they see the video. But others stihl doubt me. It doesn't matter tho, because I now have multiple devices for different situations... And you have to go to desktop site like CreTree said. It's because I put music on it....thanks CreTree.

Your device looks good to me. Your welds look great. There is nothing wrong with fabricating your own gear as long as you know what you are doing. I started splicing because I had a store bought sling come unburied.

I would like to see fair leeds on either side of the bollard so you can wrap it clock wise as well.

Thanks for posting and how much are you asking for them?

TreeBreezy, they are $425.00+ shipping, comes with kerf bracket 4" 20,000mbs ratchet strap and a top D ring to attach a fiddle block when necessary drum is 4.5" and is smooth as silk. The whole system has a wll of around 5,400 lbs

Welcome to Treebuzz!

What other gear have you made?

Nicely fabricated

Having larger diameter tubing and pins reduces the bend ratio of ropes. Bend ratio is really important when dealing with large loads
