Hivee vs. Tachyon

Hey guys, I apologize if there are threads about this, I searched but didn't see any.

Right now I am climbing on 1/2 HiVee and I do like it but I am thinking about buying the New England Tachyon 11.5mm line. My HiVee isn't all that old but it is the same color as my layards and I hate that, I don't want to grab the wrong line by mistake. There are 2 small nicks on the line thanks to someone I worked with hanging it next to a saw in the trailer without me knowing it. One of them goes through a full strand and the other one isn't as bad. Both are near an end so I could cut it off, I have just been using the other end.

Is there a big difference in the rope diameter? Pros and Cons between the 2? I climb DdRT.

If you guys like the Tachyon, I was thinking about using the HiVee for light rigging. Bad idea?

Thanks.

Edit* If you have any other ropes you prefer feel free to list them as well. My other option is just to get the lime green HiVee.

I think you'll like how light weight Tachyon is compared to the 1/2" HiVee, saves energy when you have to redirect the tail in the tree. Tachyon has a very smooth surface compared to 16-strands and even many 24-strands, I think you really want to wear grippy gloves like the Atlas Fit, otherwise day-to-day you're going to be over-gripping and wearing your hands and forearms out. If you don't like wearing gloves you might not like climbing on Tachyon.

I've really liked Tachyon, but I think I'm going to try Vortex next, just for interest sake.

I had thought the smaller diameter of Tachyon would bother me a bit after so many years on 1/2" but it never did. I bet you'd like it. I've got a hank of Poison HiVy as well and it seems like a nice mix of the two. But two cons for me: It twists like a mofo, and it DOES milk, don't beleive the hype. I had mine spliced on both ends and had to cut off the one side.

and Moss is right about the gloves. X2

1/2 inch lines make great light rigging lines.

I have found that rocket line has some good grip. Also if you like 16 stand feel look at allgears 16 strand rope that is less than 1/2

Here is one of them

Also do you use a natural crotch or friction saver of some kind?

Thanks guys! All it info is helpful. Robina, which one twists and milks the Tachyon or the Poison HiVy? The poison HiVy is another one I am giving some thought. I might take a ride to Shelter Tree next week and see if they have the Tachyon in stock so I can feel it. That is the only issue I have is not being able to feel the rope in my hands when ordering online. Thanks again for all the input guys.

Rob, I had trouble understanding if you meant the tachyon milked or both pi and tachyon too. I have a short 75' of tachyon and it milked off probably 8 inches after going through my spiderjack. I do love it though.

As far as PI goes remember that PI is the same as bluemoon. My lanyard is bluemoon and I like it, but I milked it when I spliced it and over so few feet I don't remember noticing how bad it was. I do like the bluemoon and am considering it or imori for my next line.

Shelter Tree will def have tachyon there they sell a ton of it. Not sure about yale bluemoon/pi.

If you're considering a smaller line check out velocity while you're at Shelter. It's been my main line for a while now and I've been very happy with it.

You're on the right track. Half inch to rigging...replace w/11mm. Weight and volume is decreased.

Milking isn't a deal breaker for me. If you hot cut your rope ends don't melt inner and outer together. Pull out a few inches of inner, melt it, milk it back inside. Melt outer to cap the end of the rope. Climb on... The rope will stabilize and then re melt individually.

I might make it down to Jamestown this weekend. Where are you? If I go I'll bring my Tachyon along and you are welcome to climb on it. Pm me your number and I'll let you know if I'm coming.

That would be awesome man! I am in Western Cranston but could meet anywhere. I actually wanted to scout Jamestown and Newport to see if I could find any cool new trees to climb. I will PM you my cell number now.

ABL, you cannot go wrong with tachyon, I did not like it that much coming from velocity but I have really come to like it. When used with 8mm HRC and a VT it really is a good compromise between the 11mm velocity and 13mm arbormaster. I still like using bluestreak on removals, but pruning I recommend the tachyon. I have big hands and the weight saved with velocity is nothing compared to the fatigue my hands and shoulders used to take pulling Ddrt.

If you climb on a Tautline or a Blake's hitch you might not like tachyon. For some reason those hitches slip a bunch on Tachyon especially when it's new.

Its my understanding that all double braid ropes will milk, and like Tom said no big deal. The reason I mentioned the milking is because poison ivy is advertised as "non milking" and splicable on both ends. I bought a 150 foot hank and had both ends spliced only to have to cut one end off due to the excessive milking. Just a heads up really, not to splice both ends unless you have another plan in mind - say a lanyard or something.

I do find poison ivy very twisty though. Other than that I like it.

I use either a Schwavisch or Distel with 8mm BeeLine. I like the setup I use but am always open to try out new things.

I'd go with tachyon, I've been climbing on it for about five years and love it.

Oh yeah I forgot to say it footlocks nicely too not as nice as velocity but very nice indeed. Here it is in footlock action.

Haha, too true, did a test with friend who's a Tautline climber using a new hank of Tachyon, 100% no go, we had a good laugh. And no point using a rope like Tachyon if you climb a Blake's.

First time I saw Tachyon is when Banjo brought a prototype hank along on a climb. Was a great color pattern, I wish NE Ropes had put that into production. I've been climbing Tachyon ever since, nothing has threatened to replace it yet.

You can splice both ends you just have to splice one then run it a bit before you splice the other. I have done this with tachyon, PI. Blue moon and many others.
