hitch hiker or rope wrench

I've been easing into climbing over the past few years as time and money will allow, both for recreation and for removals. I've been thinking of trying SRT but it requires a lot of equipment I don't have ($$$$). My question is why do you NEED something like the RW or the HH? Can you not just use a friction hitch to descend?

I used to do a single decent, out of a spar I left a half inch pull line choked on, with a two down 3 up prussic. It would jam up a fair amount and I had to jerk hard on it to get down.

Once I got a Hitch Hiker everything else, and that, was smooth as silk.

So having a RW or HH is so the knot doesn't jam on descent from being over loaded?

Instead of descending on the hitch you could use a figure 8 or belay tube, or a Munster hitch. A lot cheaper and does the job until additional funds are available.
